As the world readies to celebrate 29 May 2003 the anniversary of the conquest of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa 50 years ago, the question endures -- were they really first to the top? Mallory and Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine led a 1924 British expedition assault on Everest and failed to return, but ever since speculation continues that they may have been the first to reach the highest point on the planet. 15/10/07
