On chilly nights in the Andean highlands, warm up with a canelazo, a spiced fruit drink that is spiked with aguardiente (sugar cane alcohol) and served hot. Long consumed throughout Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, the drink is typically made from naranjilla or maracuyá juice--making this an excellent excuse to try some of the local fruits as well. Popular around Christmastime throughout the Andes, this drink is especially easy to find in Ecuador, where it is often served on the streets out of caldrons.
