It's interesting seeing the fluid dynamics of modern flight turned backwards on a stationary aircraft. Normally during takeoff, an airplane flies into the wind to create as much air movement as possible over the wings. It's a mixture of the Bernoulli effect and a variety of other physical principles, but the end result is lift as a function of air speed.

And if the aircraft isn't moving? Technically you can still get lift with enough air speed. Youtube user CaptainHarlock999 captured an amazing video this week in an aircraft boneyard outside of Los Angeles. With winds at the scrapyard reaching over 70MPH, enough lift was actually generated by a 747's wings to actually pick the fuselage up off of the ground, bouncing the plane around as the back wheels stayed in place.

The Southern Air 747 in question was actually scheduled to be scrapped, so the engines and much of the interior were stripped off of the airframe. Because of that reduced weight the aircraft was able to lift off the ground -- so don't worry, it won't happen to you on your next trip!
Virtual reality is becoming part of real life, as three New York-area airports adopt virtual avatars into their customer service program. The avatars are part of an expansive plan to enhance customer travel experience by the Port Authority. Starting in early July, JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia will be the first airports in North America to implement the virtual avatar assistants. These hologram-like workers will provide automated, basic information, like directions to airport gates, shopping advertisements and security checkpoint notifications. And to make them look like real staff, they will wear the signature red coats of the live customer service agents.

"The Port Authority's three major airports - JFK, Newark Liberty and LaGuardia - are gateways to the world, serving over a hundred million fliers annually," said David Samson, Port Authority Chairman. "Ensuring the satisfaction of these customers is a foremost priority, and these initiatives move us closer to achieving that objective."

These basic avatars are just the beginning, as future plans include having interactive virtual agents that can answer questions.

Mark Day is a videographer with an eye for beauty. Instead of lamenting over the fact that he couldn't stare straight into the partially eclipsed sun during the solar eclipse he saw on May 20, he decided to make a video of the surreal shadows cast from the eclipsed sun. I saw the video first on Laughing Squid. The crescent shapes make hard surfaces look like rippling water, reflecting the sunlight in fragments. Did you see the solar eclipse on May 20? If so, did you see it in full or partially? Let us know what your eclipse experience was like in the comments. Feel free to link to any photos of videos you have.
Continue reading Video Of The Day: Partial Solar Eclipse Shadows

Video Of The Day: Partial Solar Eclipse Shadows originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 23 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. Cory Poole put together an impressive time-lapse video of the May 20 solar eclipse. Poole captured 700 images of the solar eclipse from his vantage point in Redding, California. Through a Coronado Solar Max 60 Double Stack telescope, Poole caught the beautiful images. Accompanying the video is music that appears to be his own, noted as having been made using Ableton Live. If you missed the solar eclipse on May 20, this video will certainly give you a better view than you could have seen with your own eyes.
Video: Solar Eclipse Time Lapse originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 22 May 2012 14:30:00 EST.
Over the past two months a group of 20 muralists from around the world have been coming together to revamp vacant walls in a Baltimore neighborhood. Although not currently well trodden by visitors, the neighborhood is full of theaters and art galleries and was recently dubbed the Station North Arts & Entertainment District in hopes that it would become the new cultural heart of Baltimore. The ambitious mural project, Open Walls Baltimore, is already sparking national dialogue and will hopefully enliven public spaces enough that visitors are attracted to the area. Artists leaving their mark on the neighborhood have come from faraway places such as Buenos Aires, Montreal, Capetown, and Kiev, as well as several homegrown muralists from Baltimore and nearby New York City. The video above gives an idea of the spirit of the project, which is being curated by street artist Gaia. All of the murals should be completed by this Friday, May 25, when a celebration will take place throughout the district.

Baltimore has a long history of promoting public art. Outside of Open Walls Baltimore, there are two- and three-story murals painted on more than 100 buildings throughout the city. Of course, Baltimore isn't the only city known for its murals - to view a sampling of a wide range of public art check out the Mural Locator, a self-funded website working to chart amazing murals throughout the world. So far, more than 500 murals have been mapped since the website began in 2010.
Video Of The Day: Muralists Change The Face Of Baltimore Neighborhood originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 21 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. Sometimes, having a delayed flight isn't such a bad thing, at least not for passengers aboard a recent Air Canada flight from Toronto to Frankfurt. Luckily for them, the Canada-based Lemon Bucket Orkestra were on the flight, and able to provide some free, impromptu musical entertainment.

According to USA Today, the group is a self-proclaimed "Balkan-Klezmer-Gypsy-Party-Punk Super-Band."

"Our plane got delayed 20 minutes so we got out the instruments," the band explains on their YouTube page.
But Russian teens recently topped this daredevil act with their own ascent of the recently completed Russky Island Bridge, which finally connects the very isolated island in eastern Russia with Vladivostok and the mainland.

Eighteen-year-old Raskalov, one of the Russian teens in the video, has devoted a blog to his extreme, free-climbing endeavors. The mind-blowing photos on his blog are from atop Russia's tallest structures and include gorgeous scenery of famous Moscow squares, glimpses of snowy Siberia and more.

We recommend you watch the following video while on solid ground else you may get vertigo.
The first astronauts are landing on Mars this week. . .at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City.

Installation artist Tom Sachs is running his "SPACE PROGRAM: MARS," a four-week spaceflight involving a crew of actors and elaborate sets made from common materials bought in a hardware store. The sets cover every detail of the mission including getting into space suits, provisions of food and launching Mars rovers.

There will be several liftoffs so visitors don't miss one of the most popular parts of any space mission.

As this preview clip shows, Tom Sachs isn't about to put NASA out of business. I kind of like the hokeyness of the whole thing, though. It gives the exhibition a childlike feel that brings back all those fond '80s memories of watching the Space Shuttle missions. Tom Sachs has tapped into the fact that we all got inspired by space when we were kids, and many of us still look to the stars and planets with a childlike sense of wonder.

Tom Sachs' "SPACE PROGRAM: MARS" runs from May 16 to June 17.
Flying To Mars From New York City originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 17 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. His approach to travel and adventure, often with a complete disregard to his own welfare, has earned him fans and critics alike, and has made him an easy target for parody.

Take the video below for example. It was created by an Australian company called Priceless Productions and features a Bear impersonator named Elliot Loney, who must learn to navigate through the perils of the urban jungle. In this mock show, entitled "Man Vs Metro," you'll find travel advice that is at least as dubious as anything Bear has ever offered us.

I was leisurely watching this St. Vincent tour video while having my coffee this morning, but once it came to an end, I had to watch it again. St. Vincent's touring drummer, Brooklyn-based Matt Johnson, is a wise man. After 20 years of touring, this guy has some golden advice on touring, traveling and how to deal with it all and, better yet, grow from it. Everyone can take notes from him, but his words are especially relevant to travelers who enjoy a good, long, hard journey - like a tour.

Matt Johnson:

"It's a very humble way to live. You live without many possessions. You live without many of the comforts that other people either do or don't take for granted. I remember when I first started touring I would get quite homesick. Today, I feel like I am better at finding my home wherever I am. You can be so lonely living your life where you never go outside of five miles of where you live. For me, traveling all the time doesn't mean that you get to experience something new all the time. It means that you get to experience your same old self with some different outer stuff around you. And so for me, reaching out and learning the stories of where I'm going as best as I can helps me to form a picture of the world that is more accurate. I don't know. It's more fun. It's beautiful."
Video Of The Day: St. Vincent Tour Video originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 16 May 2012 18:00:00 EST.
Watch out, Segway - there's a new kind of people mover in town, and you don't even have to stand up to use it. Earlier this week, Honda introduced the UNI-CUB, a self-balancing electric vehicle intended to transport people inside large buildings such as airports, museums and shopping malls. The compact device looks kind of like a futuristic motorized unicycle, except there is an extra wheel on the back for maneuverability. Similar to the Segway, riders simply shift their weight to move backward and forward, side-to-side, or even diagonally. But unlike the Segway, users are free to use their hands and are able to buzz along on the compact device while sitting at eye-level with pedestrians, making the UNI-CUB an unobtrusive addition to foot traffic (besides, of course, all the people who stop to stare).

For travelers, especially those with disabilities, the UNI-CUB has the potential to revolutionize getting from place to place. People who cannot walk long distances are currently limited to using cumbersome scooters - especially when standing upright on a Segway for a long period of time is not an option. Since it's less bulky, weights only 22 pounds, and can be folded up into a carrying case, the UNI-CUB also might be able to help users get through airport security and board planes with ease.

This is all just speculation, of course. Honda does not yet have a planned release date for the robot unicycle. Besides, we can't forget that even the Segway never lived up to its hype as a product that would redefine the way we travel. Instead, the machine is most commonly known as a shopping center patrol vehicle. It doesn't look like we'll see armies of UNI-CUBs replacing the Segways that are now popular for city tours, either. The transporter is intended for indoor use only and moves at walking speed, about 3.7 miles per hour.

Is the UNI-CUB just another ridiculous people mover, or would you go along for a ride on the sit-down Segway? Personally, I think I'll hold out for my own hovercraft.

Will This Motorized Unicycle Redefine Transportation? Last week, Klout announced "Klout for iPhone," and this week, the influx of app-based perks begins. Their first partnership is one we'd actually enjoy - if we were traveling internationally from SFO. The company that pioneered social media influence measurement has partnered with Cathay Pacific Airways to allow anyone with a score of 40 or over to show their Klout score at the door to enter the airline's First and Business Class Lounge.

This applies to any visitor traveling through the "A" boarding area at SFO's international terminal, even if they aren't a Cathay Pacific passenger.

Inside the lounge, you'll get access to the airline's signature noodle bar, workstations and showers, as shown in the video above.

Have you used this perk? What did you think?

This quirky time lapse shows how Europe's borders have expanded, contracted, and expanded again. We're pretty sure the original intent was to help those studying for a World Geography test or the like, but it's a fun tool for travelers too - is the area you're visiting this summer a part of the original Hapsburg empire? Has the hotel you're staying in always been in France? Watch it. We're sure you'll enjoy.
Time-Lapse Video Shows Europe's Changing Borders, 1000 AD to 2003 originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 16 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. Millions of people get around Istanbul each day via dolmuş, a shared taxi. Similar to the colectivo of Latin America or the dollar vans of New York City, a dolmuş is generally a mini-bus or van that follows a fixed route for a fixed price. At the beginning of the route, the bus waits until it is full of passengers (dolmuş means stuffed in Turkish) before departing. You hand your money (theoretically a share of a private taxi's rate, but usually 2-3 TL) up to the driver, and hop out whenever you get to your destination; there are rarely official bus stops.

The video above may look like it's from the 1950s, but it's actually from 1986. As recently as a few decades ago, the dolmuş vehicle of choice wasn't the large yellow van you see today, but classic American cars from the mid-century and pre-war. Some of the vintage cars were customized with a third bench to stuff in more passengers!
Something about this ride at the Divo Ostrov (Wonder Island) amusement park in St. Petersburg, Russia, seems a little bit off. Things start off pretty normal on the "Wind Shear," but as you'll notice about a minute into the video the ride throws all of the riders for a loop - or rather an upside-down nonsensical twist. Just watching the video is enough to make stomachs turn, especially when coupled with some knowledge on the park's not-so-great track record. In 2010, ten riders on a rocket-shaped attraction at the same park were left dangling 229 feet above ground from a single thread when a cable snapped. Luckily, rescuers were able to safely unload passengers without any injuries being reported. Two years prior, however, a 12-year-old girl was not so lucky. She was seriously injured on a trampoline ride in an accident also involving a broken cable. Knowing the park's disconcerting safety record, would you be likely to try a whirl on the Wind Shear? Perhaps a news report on the rocket ride incident (after the jump) will make you think again.

Continue reading Video Of The Day: Scary Russian Amusement Park Ride

Video Of The Day: Scary Russian Amusement Park Ride originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 14 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. One of the advantages of living in Europe is that you can visit lots of historic sites with your kids. This fosters an interest in the past, reduces museum fatigue and is a great way to learn together.

I live in Cantabria, on the north coast of Spain, a region filled with historic sites from Napoleonic forts to preserved Roman towns. Cantabria is most famous for the prehistoric cave art in ten caves that have been given UNESCO World Heritage status. From about 17,000 to 11,000 years ago, people decorated Cantabria's many caves with pictures of bison, horses and other animals. They often used the natural contours of the rock to give the animals a three-dimensional look. In addition to the animals, there are strange patterns of lines and dots. Archaeologists have spent generations arguing over what these mean, but of course we'll never know for sure.

My son is going on a school trip this week to Cantabria's most famous cave, Altamira, and he's looking forward to visiting a place that Dad has never seen. Yes, my 6-year-old is already competing with me for travel stories! And now he's reminding me that I haven't been to the Madrid train museum either. OK, kid, you win.

For more on the Paleolithic cave art of Cantabria, check out this video by Turismo Cantabria, which only has 267 views on YouTube. Sounds to me like Turismo Cantabria need to do more marketing. This is a great part of Spain for hikes, beaches and food, and makes a great alternative to the usual tourist circuit.
Video: The Prehistoric Cave Art Of Cantabria, Spain originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 14 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. The Mütter Museum is not for the squeamish. Brimming with medical oddities, pathological specimens and antique medical equipment, it's where you'll find a book bound in human flesh, dried severed hands, a two-headed baby in formaldehyde, Albert Einstein's brain and a collection of objects that have been swallowed and removed. There's also a nine-foot-long human colon that contained 40 pounds of fecal matter (it was once part of a sideshow act called "the Human Balloon") and the body of "the Soap Lady," whose corpse turned itself into a soapy substance because of the chemical properties of the soil she was buried in. Visitors can "ooh" and "ahh" at a collection of 139 human skulls in neat rows, or check out the tallest human skeleton on display in North America, which stands tall at 7.5 feet right next to the skeleton of a dwarf.

Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter originally began collecting these strange items, which were donated to The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1858 for the purpose of medical research and education. To this day, the museum exists with that goal in mind - as well as for the shear purpose of shocking and amazing the general public. As the collection has grown, there are now over 20,000 items on display in jars and cases around the museum. Check out the museum's YouTube station to be introduced to some of the curiosities of the exhibits.
Continue reading Museum Month: Mütter Museum In Philadelphia

Museum Month: Mütter Museum In Philadelphia originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 14 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. Love to fly? Sure. What if you could have the experience of traveling first class without the hassle of security lines? We'd like that even better. But when the question comes to "do you love airplane food?" or "do you fly because of the food?" the answer is almost always "no," unless, of course, you make a regular habit of first or business-class international travel.

But a new restaurant in China is making waves for marrying the luxury of first-class travel with a fine dining concept. The A380 restaurant is actually the second of its kind - the first is in Taipei - and is drawing regular crowds who come to be served by waitresses dressed like flight attendants in a fully recreated upper class cabin interior.

What do you think? Would this fly in the United States?

Thanks to BornRich for the tip.

Every tourist who visits Pisa, Italy, returns with a photo pretending to hold up the city's famous bell tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Creating the photo illusion is so popular, that hoards of tourists flock to the town for the sole purpose of snapping the picture. One visitor, however, took it upon himself to walk around the square surrounding the tower and prank unsuspecting tourists. While they stood with arms outstretched, he snuck in, doling out one high-five after another. Watch above to see their surprised reactions.
High-Five Prank In Pisa, Italy (VIDEO) originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 10 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. Over the past 250 years, humans have impacted the Earth irreversibly. This three-minute short film, commissioned by the Planet Under Pressure conference, uses stunning visuals to show how population growth, combined with rapid industrialization and globalization, have contributed to a degree of global change on par with a major geological shift. In addition to being a feat of data imagery, the video is also a reminder for us of the need to tread lightly, both at home and in our travels.
Video Of The Day: How Humans Have Fundamentally Changed The Earth originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 09 May 2012 18:00:00 EST.
