In fact, those weekends were so popular that they helped several parks, such as Yellowstone, to set new attendance records.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar made the official announcement on this Veteran's Day celebration, saying "The Department of the Interior is honored to offer this fee free day to thank our nation's service men and women," He went on to say, "The sacrifices and achievements of the brave men and women of our armed forces can never be understated. We invite all of our visitors to enjoy this fee free day and take time out on this national holiday to remember our service men and women who are currently serving overseas in harms way."

Join in on the celebration for yourself by finding a park near you.

With snow already falling all over the U.S., it is clear that ski season is in full swing, and with winter still more than a month and a half away, ski bums and bunnies have plenty of great months on the slope ahead. To that end, Outside Magazine has published their list of the 16 best ski resorts in North America, just in time for you to start planning your first weekend in the mountains.

As you might expect, the majority of the resorts are found in the western United States, with Colorado and Utah particularly well represented. Some of the places that make the cut include the iconic Alta/Snowbird, which averages an astonishing 500 inches of snow per year and Snowmass in Aspen, which combines great skiing with luxury living. Our neighbors to the north get some love too, with Whistler-Blackcomb and Revelstoke Mountain Resort, earning nods. Both are located in British Columbia for those looking for a Canadian escape.

The rest of the list includes Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Alyeska Resort, Alaska; Silverton Mountain, Colorado; Breckenridge, Colorado; Park City, Utah; Power Mountain, Utah; Bridger Bowl, Montana; Crested Butte, Colorado; Steamboat, Colorado; Taos, New Mexico, and Mammoth Mountain, California. And just to prove that not all of the fun is out west, Jay Peak, Vermont makes the list as the lone resort in the Eastern United States, proving that you don't have to go a long way to get a superior experience on the slopes.

So, did your favorite resort make the list? Which of these have you been to? What did they leave off the list?
Outside Magazine lists the best ski resorts in North America originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST. The equipment is expensive, and in order to participate, you need to go to a specific place. In the case of skiing, this means paying ski lift fees and traveling to a pricey ski resort. The costs can add up and make it prohibitively expensive for less affluent ski enthusiasts.

But there are some less expensive ski resorts. Ski.com has put together a list of the top ten affordable ski spots in North America.

Keystone, near Denver, makes the list because of the many extras it offers, such as night skiing included with a lift ticket on the day of arrival, plus access to nearby resorts like Vail and Breckenridge. Steamboat in Colorado is on the list thanks to affordable ski-in/ski-out lodging and convenient shuttle services. And Winter Park, also in Colorado, is praised as catering to a "moderate demographic, no luxury properties."

Whistler-Blackcomb, near Vancouver, is normally a very pricey destination. But in an attempt to lure visitors before the Olympics, it is offering some fantastic deals right now. Airfare to Vancouver can be expensive, depending on where you fly from, but you can save money by flying into Seattle and taking a train to Vancouver.

Jackson Hole (Wyoming), Banff(Alberta, Canada), and Lake Tahoe round out the western top ten with plentiful deals, discounts, and special offers that help keep prices low. On the east coast, Stowe(Vermont) and Lake Placid in New York offer excellent mid-week prices.

The 10 most-affordable ski spots in North America originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 16:30:00 EST. I did a little bit of snowboarding 15 years ago, but it didn't amount to much. So, when I write about the ski deals that come across my desk, it's not lost on me that some people don't hit the slopes. The latest package from The Lodge at Vail, a RockResort, has something for those of us who don't stumble down the mountain. The "Spa, Savor & Snowshoe" deal is for everyone else. Guests can work up some hunger while snowshoeing, get those taxed muscles rubbed down at the spa and tie off the day with a three-course dinner at the Wildflower restaurant.

At $423 a night, the savings is around 25 percent, but you need to book a three-night stay. You'll get a $300 spa credit, half-day guided snowshoe tour and daily breakfast for two (along with the dinner at Wildflower).

It looks like you don't need to be a skier to enjoy winter in Colorado!

Alternatives to skiing: spa, anyone? originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST.
Circle October 30, 2009 on your calendar. Do it twice. That's the date the Telluride Ski Resort 2009-2010 season pass sale closes - you have until Friday to lock in a savings of up to 50 percent. With plenty more people hitting the slopes this year, expect demand to be high, so you'd be out of your mind not to lock this in early.

To pick up the biggest win, buy a 4Pass, which cuts the season pass price in half at a cost of only $998 a person. And, if cash is tight, only half the amount is due up front. If you're going solo, the price of a pass drops from $1,850 to $1,198 - still a pretty steep decline.

If you plan to spend a lot of time out at Telluride this year, jump on this deal - by Friday.

Last chance for Telluride deal closing in originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 11:00:00 EST. Season passes for their slopes were up 13 percent last month. Sure, some of the deals have probably helped, but the market has definitely changed over the past year. In 2008, travelers were feeling the fresh sting of the financial crisis, and job cuts were looming. Everyone became more cautious, because they didn't know if they'd fall victim to the cruel lottery to come.

Now, it looks like the worst is behind us (though nobody can be sure), and we're all looking for a little bit of relief. For skiers, this means biting the bullet, paying what's necessary and hitting the powder. Mark Kelley, a 59-year-old skier and real estate broker from Denver put it best: "I have always gone skiing, even during difficult times." He continued, "I am more inclined to cut down on my spending on the mountain than to not go skiing at all."

Ski resorts are predicting an increase in bookings this season, thanks to eager skiers who were stuck at home in 2008. But what about us poor schlubs that popped that cherry a long time ago? Are we to be left out in the cold, both literally and figuratively? Fear not fellow snow lovers, because our friends to the north are coming to the rescue. Sun Peaks Resort, located in British Columbia, Canada, is running a contest of their own, as they search for their official Ski Bum for the 2009-2010 season.

As the Sun Peaks Ski Bum, you'll receive all kinds of special privileges and treatment for three months, starting on January 4th, and running through March 31st of next year. The lucky winner will receive flights to and from Kamloops, British Columbia from the the closest major airport to their city of residence. They'll also get accommodations at a variety of resorts during that period, as well as a season pass for some of the best ski slopes in North America. And if that wasn't enough, the lucky bum will also get outfitted with ski gear, including clothes and their choice of skis or a snowboard, amongst other stuff.

Continue reading Become an official ski bum!

Become an official ski bum! originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 09:00:00 EST. The resort will open its doors at 9 AM local time, greeting the first eager ski bums and bunnies of the year with 18 inches of fresh powder.

For Loveland, which sits 50 miles west of Denver, this will be the earliest opening day in 40 years. With 160 acres of groomed slopes, and the longest run reaching two miles in length, there is plenty to offer for the beginner and experienced skier alike. And while that 18 inches of snow may sound good for now, it is nothing compared to what will come in the weeks ahead. Loveland averages 400 inches of snowfall a year, ensuring a great season ahead.

Loveland won't have all of the ski business to itself for long however. Rival resort Arapahoe Basin plans to open on Friday, which will be it's earliest opening day ever, and the Boreal Ski Area in California will start allowing runs on Saturday as well.

With these ski resorts opening earlier than ever, one has to wonder what happened to global warming? Where I live in Texas we're still having 90º days, and hard to think about skiing that doesn't involve being pulled behind a boat. I'm a little envious of the skiers and snowboarders who are going to hit the slopes in the next few days. Anyone know of any cheap airfares to Colorado?
Ski season officially begins today! originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 08:30:00 EST. Beginning in 2010, all skiiers and snowboarders at the resorts' freestyle terrain parks will also be required to wear helmets. The new rules will be phased in at Intrawest's resorts in Canada as well as their properties in the United States, including Steamboat and Stratton. In order to better publicize the decision, Intrawest plans to make a number of changes to its website and advertising, updating the imagery to include photos of guests wearing protective headgear.

Say what you will about the wisdom of mandatory helmet laws, but Intrawest's decision just makes sense. Whether you're riding a motorcycle, paddling the rapids or skiing down a hill, it should be natural to wear a helmet during higher risk activities. Richardson's high-profile skiing death only seems to have further pushed the issue to the forefront. Whether this sort of mandatory helmet rule will be extended to other American ski resorts remains to be seen.
Ski resort adds mandatory helmet rule originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 02 Oct 2009 15:00:00 EST. Then, the calendar page flips over, and we take on 2010. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways left to make the rest of this year memorable. In Finland, home to some of the strangest celebrations on the planet, you can find a few interesting distractions - and they'll make for great stories when you get home. Of course, there are a few mixed in that aren't so strange but could still be pretty interesting.

1. Rovaniemi Design Week
Head up to the capital of Lapland to enjoy its first ever design week. On its own, this seems pretty mundane ... until you get a sense of what's scheduled to happen. The event will host the 24th Design Challenge, which involves competing to develop the Arctic Circle: Santa's home base.
September 28-October 4, 2009

2. Baltic Herring Fair
This festival dates back to 1743 in Helsinki and is the oldest event dedicated to Finland's most important <strike>marine product</strike> fish. Look for it in the Old Market Square.
October 4-10, 2009

3. Carnival of Light at Linnamäki Amusement Park
The Carnival of Light involves fire acrobats and the Pumpkin Fest parade, not to mention an array of ghosts and witches. A laser show and Harry Potter-themed skating rink tie it all together.
October 8-19, 2009

But don't tell that to the Apex Sports Group, who are preparing to release the "most expensive ski boot in the world" next month, with the aptly named Apex Ski Boot clocking in at a staggering $1295.

And what exactly does 1300 clams buy the prospective ski bum? Well for starters, the boots come with three distinct parts, including an inner liner that can be molded to specifically fit your foot, a specially designed carbon chassis that a skier can step in and out of as needed, and a walking boot that can be used for hiking around the lodge. The custom built system is supposed to be more comfortable and flexible than anything else on the market, and the designers say it may be possible to even drive in the boots.

The Apex system is also significantly lighter than most other boots on the market too, tipping the scales at just 8.5 pounds, roughly two pounds lighter than most other boots. That may not seem all that significant out of the box, but you'll come to appreciate the lighter weight after a full day on the slopes.

For now, the boots will only be available through the Apex website or in specialty shops in Aspen, Vail, and other Colorado ski resorts. The company hopes to sell 1200 pairs this season, recession be damned. The question is, are these boots just over priced hype or are they poised to become the luxury brand of ski gear?
Recession Over! $1300 ski boots arrive in time for ski season! originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 08:30:00 EST. As you plan your next girls getaway, keep The Osprey at Beaver Creek in mind. This RockResort is the closest hotel to a chairlift in North America, and its post-New Year escape package is sure to put you in a room. From January 6 - 9, 2010, the ReTreat Yourself package combines skiing and snowboarding (guided by pro athletes) and yoga with Beaver Creek instructors - all with the goal of building a little girl power.

So, recharge yourself once the anxiety of the holiday season is behind you with three nights at The Osprey, daily skiing and snowboarding lessons by pros Megan Pischke-Porcheron (snowboarder), Barrett Christy-Cummins (snowboarder) and Kasha Rigby (skier). Then, spend several sessions calming your spirit with Forrest Yoga teacher Amy Baker, balancing the excitement of the slopes with the pursuit of relaxation. Life coach Linda Kennoy is on hand to conduct sessions on Manifesting Your True Personal Power, Fate and Destiny and Energy Fields, Magic and Soul Mates (well, the other stuff sounds pretty cool). The package also includes daily breakfast and lunch, mini spa treatments and a consultation with a skin esthetician.

At $1,428.32, this is a bargain, especially since all resort fees and taxes are included (except lift tickets, which are available at a discounted rate.

Girls' getaway at The Osprey offers more than the norm originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST. And snow usually requires precipitation and a sufficiently cold temperature(this concludes today's lesson in meteorological science). But as of August 29th, snow - and the weather conditions required to create it - will become unnecessary for American skiers.

That's the date when the Liberty Mountain SnowFlex Center opens. And it'll stay open, all year round. How? The complex, on the grounds of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, will be home to a ski slope that utilizes a synthetic material called SnowFlex. SnowFlex aims to be the closest replication of snow. It's already in use at several European locations and has been used at Olympic training facilities, but this will be the first public ski area in the US to use it.

The Liberty Mountain Center will feature a beginner slope, freestyle rails, and a quarter pipe. Prices are pretty reasonable - actually when compared with the cost of most mountains, they're downright cheap. Thursday through Sunday rates are $7 an hour. Monday through Wednesday the rate goes down to just $5 an hour.

For die-hard skiers and snowboarders, I doubt this faux snow could ever replace the real thing, but for those looking to get in some more practice time, it's one cheap way to spend summer on the slopes.

University in Virginia opens year-round ski slopes originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 22 Aug 2009 11:30:00 EST. This weekend, August 15-16, is the final free weekend of the summer, and your last chance to take advantage of the government's generosity.

There are a number of amazing parks spread throughout the U.S. and I've recommended five of them here and five more here. When writing those lists, I was looking at parks that were a bit off the beaten path, and less crowded in the summer months, when travelers flock to the top parks, resulting in traffic jams and less than ideal conditions. But as the dog days of summer begin to fade, it may be time to visit one of the more iconic parks. Here are five of the best.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho
Perhaps the most famous and popular of all the national parks, Yellowstone is home to Old Faithful, the geyser that erupts at regular intervals of roughly 90 minutes or so. Yellowstone offers travelers plenty to do year round, with hiking, fishing, camping, and much more. There is spectacular wildlife to be seen as well, including elk, moose, bear, and wolves. But be warned, this popular park can get crowded quickly, and it can definitely impact your experience there.

The Great Smokey Mountain National Park, Tennessee and North Carolina
The most visited of all the national parks, Great Smokey Mountain offers up access to the mountain range that is gives it its name, thanks to more than 800 miles of hiking trails and remote backcountry campsites. There are an estimated 1500 bears living within the park, along with plenty of deer and elk as well, and the plant life is equally diverse, with more than 1660 different kinds of wildflowers alone. The park is celebrating its 75 anniversary this year, with plenty of activities and attractions for everyone that visits.

Continue reading National Parks host final free weekend of the summer

National Parks host final free weekend of the summer originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. They want an amazing travel experience, and are willing to go to great lengths to get it, all the while adhering to the principles of sustainable travel.

With that in mind, the Times Online has an excellent article listing ten top "green" travel experiences, or what they call "clean breaks", each of which offer cultural immersion, amazing scenery, and a fantastic experience that is far off the beaten path. For instance, the article recommends heading to Lebanon to hike the Mountain Trail, the country's first long distance trek, which runs through the Mount Lebanon range from Qbaiyat, in the north, to Marjaayoun in the south. The trail is roughly 270 miles in length, with regularly spaced stone inns offering up a place to sleep, good food, and plenty to drink.

For a completely different experience, hop a flight to New Zealand to spend a little time on the slopes. The authors of this piece recommend heading to Craigieburn Valley in the Southern Alps for some amazing skiing, minus the resort. Yep, that's right, no chairlifts or groomed trails here. Just a couple of rope tows that will pull you to the top of the mountain, where you'll get the opportunity to ski through untouched wilderness. And at the end of the day, relax in one of the nearby huts, which are comfortable but primitive.

Other suggestions include a swimming vacation in Finland, camping in France, and hiking in Estonia. There is a little bit of something for everyone, and you won't need to feel guilty about your impact on the environment while you travel.
Ten amazing "green" adventures originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 01 Aug 2009 08:01:00 EST. Well, even though the whole thing is incredibly tacky, and downright stupid, we know the economy is tough, and a trip abroad might not be possible this year.

Of course, the right thing to do is tell people you are staying home, but if the liecation trend is to be believed, there really are people out there that would rather lie than just chill out at home being honest.

To create the perfect liecation, you'll need to find the perfect balance between plausible lies, and downright pathetic lies. For example - don't claim you went on a 2 week safari to Kenya. The same applies to a liecation involving Mount Everest. European liecations are easy, as are any liecations in North America.

Before I erase whatever credibility I have - I have never lied about a trip, simply because I have never had the need to. The sun is beating down, and sweat is a part of daily life. But, there are a few people out there whose minds still drift to mountain tops and a chill in the air. Well, we just got a step closer to ski season: Telluride Ski Resort has announced its season pass rates for the coming winter. And, they'll look pretty familiar. The resort has decided not to raise rates this year. In fact, you could spend less this year, depending on how you buy.

Four adults can purchase their season passes together during the annual Pass Sale and get an extra year's reprieve. An individual will spend $1,198 for the full season, but if four get together, they can pay the 2007 rate of $988 a person. The only catch is that you need to do it between August 3, 2009 and October 30, 2009.

The savings is stretched even further when you realize that you get more for your money this year. Gold Hill Chutes 2-5 are opening this year, terrain that skiers have been dying to access, with chutes dropping 1,600 vertical feet. To "control the terrain," as they say, the resort has enlisted the help of two WWII howitzers.

Take THAT, terrain!

With the hot summer sun beating down on me, I actually start to miss winter. But, when that brisk chill turns into relentless cold, I start to think in the other direction. The Keystone Resort has found a way to give you the best of both. This summer, it will be the only resort to offer snow-tubing. Yes, you can roll around in - and glide on - the cold white stuff in July and August.

Keystone's Adventure Point will offer two lanes of snow every Wednesday through Sunday this summer, from 10 AM to 2:30 PM, as long as the snow lasts. Each guest can spend $25 to get a one-hour tubing session with unlimited runs (including gondola rides up the mountain).

"With the success of the tubing hill in the winter, we wanted to try and offer our guests a unique and fun experience by tubing on the snow during the summer," said Matt Hoover, tubing hill manager at Keystone Resort. "It's definitely summer time here at Keystone, but at our high altitude we can offer the best of both worlds to give guests an unforgettable on-mountain experience this summer."

Not far away, you can still hit the usual summer activities in Keystone, including the bike park (the River Run Gondola will take you back to the top), with an unlimited mountain biking season pass costing only $299. and, be sure to grab a meal at the mountaintop Alpenglow Stube and Der Fuondue Chessel. Everything tastes better at 11,444 feet.

Summer snow-tubing at Keystone Resort originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 14:00:00 EST.
