The rise of Gulf state carriers continues to impress. These airlines, which have defined themselves in part as hub-and-spoke carriers linking Europe (and the eastern coast of North America) to Asia, have developed exciting route maps over the last several years with a particularly strong reach into the Arabian Peninsula and India.

While other airlines have recently attempted to develop their hub airports for intercontinental hub-and-spoke connections as well - Finnair's recasting of Helsinki as a northern Europe-Asia hub is one example - the Gulf carriers really stand out in global terms.

Yet, awareness of their services remains far lower than it should be among Americans, despite the presence of Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways at a handful of major US airports.

The Gulf state carriers' key consumer product is a luxury flight with premium class service and a truly over-the-top experience on all three airlines. On Emirates, first class passengers are treated to private suites. Etihad's Diamond First Class features flatbeds, personal mini-bars, and anytime dining, while Qatar Airways' First Class offers turndown service with an amenity kit including products by Prada. With perks like these, it is clear that these carriers are establishing new standards for premium class service.

Even in coach, however, these airlines are delivering a decent product. I experienced the Qatar Airways economy treatment on a recent mid-haul journey from London, via Doha, and back. There was more legroom than in standard coach and the ongoing parade of meals and snacks was, if not exactly delicious, then without question, a cut above average airplane food.

Route maps, however, provide the most interesting dimension of the rise of the Gulf state carriers. While there is quite a bit of overlap between airlines, each airline covers some original territory. Let's look at where these airlines fly.
Continue reading The continuing rise of Gulf state carriers

The continuing rise of Gulf state carriers originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 10:00:00 EST.
With the rise of Qatar Airways as a long-haul airline, Doha has become an increasingly easy short-term layover destination. The Qatari flag carrier boasts especially good links between Europe and Asia via Doha. Its route map include a whopping 12 cities in India, three in China, and four in Pakistan; notably, the airline also shuttles European tourists to the Indian Ocean holiday playgrounds of the Maldives and Seychelles. In 2012, Qatar Airways will introduce an additional slate of fascinating destinations, including Kiev, Kigali, Perth, and Zanzibar.

Doha's got plenty of tourism draws, including the renovated Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art, and its Corniche. Qatar is terribly rich, with the world's highest or second-highest GDP, depending on the evaluation matrix. As you might expect, Doha's infrastructure for visitors is undeniably impressive. The city is also in the midst of a major construction boom. The stadiums under construction for the 2022 World Cup alone will keep construction humming through the end of the decade.

Since the tail-end of 2010, Doha has been home to Mathaf, Qatar's Arab Museum of Modern Art. Mathaf's current show, Cai Guo-Qiang's Saraab, features 16 impressive commissioned pieces and scores of past works. Guo-Qiang is a major artist, famous for his large-scale projects involving gunpowder and fireworks. He is particularly well known for orchestrating the extraordinary fireworks displays at the 2008 Beijing Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies.

In Arabic, "saraab" means mirage. The exhibition endeavors to explore connections between Quanzhou, Guo-Qiang's hometown, and Doha, as well as between China and the Arab world more generally. Trade links between Quanzhou and the Arabian Peninsula are not difficult to trace--the former was once the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road--and Guo-Qiang makes the most of this connection. One particularly appealing piece, titled Endless, consists of three boats, one Chinese and two Qatari, sitting side-by-side in a shallow pool, shrouded in mist.

The museum, located in a former school building, was revamped smartly by the French architect Jean-François Bodin. Other notable features of the museum include a library with a great magazine selection and a cute café.

Mathaf is a good 14 kilometers (about eight miles) from central Doha. The going rate for a taxi from a hotel is 60 riyal ($16.50). Admission to exhibitions costs 25 riyal (just shy of $7) per person. The museum is closed on Monday. Saraab runs through May 26.
Mathaf: Doha layover suggestion originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 15:00:00 EST. Honoring the world's most successful travel and tourism brands, the ceremony was a culmination of a year-long search for the best of the best. The winners we chosen by over 200,000 travel professionals for their role in helping the worldwide economic recovery who put travel-related companies in the Middle East on top.

Qatar has a "decisive role in generating new opportunities in travel and tourism," said Graham Cooke, the president and founder of World Travel Awards reports CNN. Over $100 billion worth of infrastructure is planned for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha, according to Cooke who chose to hold the award ceremony in the Qatari capital.
Of course, business travelers (well, professionals in general) all have their preferences. Having done my time in Omaha, Winnipeg and London (Ontario), I can tell you that some places are better than others. So, I was pretty excited to see think tank Z/Yen put out its Global Financial Centres Index (PDF), which shows the top five cities in the world in which to do business.

There aren't many suprises at the top end of the list, which comes out twice a year. The rankings are determined using "five key areas of competitiveness," according to Inside Investor Relations: people, business, environment, market access, infrastructure and general competitiveness."

So, what are the top five?
The non-stop journey from the airline's hub in Doha to Montreal's Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport will be a total flying time of 13 hrs 20 minutes and will be offered three times weekly, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Montreal will become the airline's fourth North American destination, currently operates daily flights to New York, Washington and Houston.

Qatar is home to more than 3,000 Canadian citizens and two Canadian university satellite campuses, The College of the North Atlantic and the University of Calgary.

Canadian nationals arriving in Qatar may enter the country without prior visa arrangements. Passengers with Qatar as their end destination may enter by obtaining a visa on arrival.

The Boeing 777 on the Montreal route has a two-class operation, offering 42 seats in Business in a spacious 2-2-2 cabin layout, with a seat pitch of 78 inches that is already the envy of competitor airlines as the seats stretch into lie-flat beds, a key demand of the corporate traveller.

In Economy, the Boeing 777 offers 217 seats in a 3-3-3 configuration with a pitch of up to 34-inch, which is among the most generous of any international airline flying wide-body aircraft on long-haul routes.

On March 6, Qatar Airways adds Stuttgart to its global network, followed on April 6 with new flights to the historic Syrian city of Aleppo - the airline's milestone 100th destination. Flights to Shiraz, Qatar Airways' third gateway in Iran begin on June 5, followed 10 days later on June 15 by scheduled services to Venice, the carrier's third destination in Italy.
On Thursday, FIFA announced that Qatar defeated South Korea, Japan, Australia and the United States in the race to host the 2022 World Cup. This historic decision marks the first time a Middle Eastern country will welcome a major sporting event.

FIFA's choice has brought a significant backlash in the American media, with critics claiming that the summer heat (as high as 120 degrees Farenheit) will be unbearable and that a country the size of Delaware (with 1.6 million residents) will not be able to handle an estimated influx of 400,000 spectators.

Nonetheless, Qatar has outlined a complex plan to renovate three stadiums and build nine brand new complexes across seven host cities. Bid organizers claim that they are developing revolutionary methods to keep each of the stadiums climate-controlled and carbon neutral, at an estimated construction cost of about $6.2 billion.
German architects AS&P have produced 12 conceptual designs that incorporate retractable roofs and solar power for cooling systems as well as modular designs that allow some of the stadiums to be dismantled at the end of the tournament and rebuilt in other countries.

The flight was diverted to Malaysia, where a new crew was secured. The flight arrived in Doha just over four hours after its scheduled arrival.

The pilot's speculated cause of death was a heart attack, but the airline has yet to confirm the cause of death or if the flight was ever at risk.
What a terrifying ordeal. The man, Mohammed al Modadi, was asked about the smell of smoke coming from the restroom and joked that he was trying to light his shoes on fire, a reference to the infamous incident with shoe-bomber Richard Reid.

The U.S. air marshall on board the flight apparently did not catch the humor. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled and escorted the United flight into Denver approximately 30 minutes ahead of schedule.

Modadi was restrained and questioned while on board the flight; it's unclear what criminal charges, if any, will be filed against him.
Since the Obama administration is planning to host the 2012 World Aids Conference, the change in policy was necessary.

The biannual conference naturally includes many people living with HIV and AIDS, and barring their entry would have been bad PR for an administration that wants to be seen as a global leader in the fight against the disease

There are only ten countries that now ban people with HIV/AIDS from entering. They are: Brunei, China. Equatorial Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

According to the website hivtravel.org, some of these countries allow people to enter under "special circumstances". Some other countries not on the list put restrictions on people living with HIV/AIDS but not full bans.
Continue reading U.S. lifts ban on travelers with HIV or AIDS

U.S. lifts ban on travelers with HIV or AIDS originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 12:30:00 EST. The day we headed inside this I.M. Pei designed building, we didn't have time to see the museum's exhibits and films, but I wanted her see Lake Erie from the building's unique perspective and to enjoy the angles, light and concept of I.M. Pei's design.

I am a bit of a building nut. A city's buildings can be one of a city's selling points. Cleveland has several, but the Hall of Fame is one of my favorites. It's worth visiting for the architecture alone.

The building juts out onto Lake Erie affording a gorgeous view, creating the sense that the lake is part of the design because of the lobby and atrium. The atrium reaches upwards in a stunning span of glass past each floor's balcony.

To get the full effect, take the escalator down from the lobby to the ground floor. Although, there's an admission fee to see the exhibits, you can enjoy aspects of the building and the gift shop for free.

In this New York Times article, Nicolai Ouroussoff waxes poetic about the new Museum of Islamic Art, the latest I.M. Pei creation. The museum located in Doha, Qatar sits on a man-made island.

Continue reading I.M. It really depends on the purpose of travel and weird awkward situations presented to the explorer while dining or attending a local sports event. In summary what I want I really want to say about the word for today is it may or may not come handy. If while in Qatar it does help you, then please thank me later and if it doesn't share with me some words you did learn.

Today's word is an Arabic word used in Qatar:

istan'na - wait

My Language Exchange is an excellent site in making friends across the globe while zoning in on the areas that give you the most trouble in your language of choice. While most services are free, contacting other members does cost a very small fee. Other learning tools for free standard Arabic online include this Learn Arabic site which has some remarkable lessons. The audio sounds a bit off for me, but they've got both the Naskh script (easy to read when learning the alphabet) and the Latin spelling of the letter. Babel Arabic is another good source. Planet Edu has an online listing of Arabic schools all over the Middle East, Africa and the U.S. Lastly, for purchase and a quick pocket guide there's the Lonely Planet Egyptian Arabic Phrasebook, which should be the closest to that spoken in Qatar verses Moroccan Arabic.

Past Arabic words: wafin, akhdar, taeadol, shwiya, la bas, filoos, khwaga, hegab, aktar, yom
Word for the Travel Wise (01/22/07) originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 20:00:00 EST. That is all. I've read a little something-something here and there about the place and even chit-chatted with some of the country's natives in the past, but they didn't sway me so much to want to go. If I ever venture out it will be because of the name, but what's in a name anyway? Robert Davis details his desert adventure in Qatar in a recent issue of GoNomad and with his tale I'm opening my eyes to what Qatar really is - at least through the eyes of Robert Davis. In his story he goes across the Arabian Desert to the Inland Sea on a day excursion with Gulf Adventure Tours. Along the way he encounters the uneasy feeling of driving down desert terrain, camels at high-speed and the blue of the sea over the ledge. Additionally he discusses snake chases and eating freshly cooked lamb meat off the spit fire for their desert dinner. Very nice read and summary of a day-trip spent in Qatar if you too are looking into exploring for more reasons than the name.

Qatar Adventures in GoNomad originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 02 Dec 2006 21:01:00 EST.

Past Arabic words: wafin, akhdar, taeadol, shwiya, la bas, filoos, khwaga, hegab
Word for the Travel Wise (11/06/06) originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 20:00:00 EST. Strangely enough I have only one word tattooed on my body and luckily it isn't the name of some estranged ex-boyfriend. Rather it is a word I use to remind me how I would like to live my life and one of the ultimate goals I'd like to achieve. The first two things people always ask when they see the tat is "what does it mean and didn't it hurt getting it on your foot?" To answer the second question first, the tattoo didn't hurt at all. I did have to hold my leg to keep from kicking the tattoo artist because the needle kept hitting a nerve that causes that kicking reflex, but it tickled for the most part. To answer the first question I will provide you with today's word.

Today's word is an Arabic word used in Qatar:

taeadol - draw, a tie (like in a good game of futbol)

When I selected the word I did so in Farsi, a language I had been pretty avid at learning while living in Los Angeles and in Farsi 'taealdo' means balance. It wasn't until a few years later in Tampa when a gentleman from Qatar noticed the tattoo and told me it's meaning in Arabic which is quite similar to the Persian meaning when you think about it. I'm just glad to know it didn't mean something like tapioca or the color perry-winkle (two of my least favorite things) in Arabic. The major lesson in today's word for the travel wise is to make sure you investigate all meanings of a word before you ink it on your outer most organ.
