As we close today's "Wild America" theme, I couldn't resist sharing this great shot of American buffalo shot and shared by JasonBechtel. The image was captured at The Wilds, a wildlife conservation area in southern Ohio. True personification of "home on the range," I think!
I wanted to find a good shot of clouds for today's photo, and I think this one reflects my mood perfectly. Clouds, to me, are good metaphors for life, and these clouds represent for me the beauty of life, the end of the day, and the dawning of a new day. When traveling through life, it's important to note moments when the clouds part and you can see things (your life, your surroundings, etc.) more clearly.

This gorgeous photo was taken by Patrick Powers in Orange County (which is another, more personal reason I chose it). The colors may be slightly over-enhanced, but the fiery effect of the photo is quite good, don't you think?
Today, it's one of the most peaceful locations in the city. The gardens are beautifully landscaped and connected by long, low archways that are remnant of the Qing Dynasty's architecture. There are ponds, waterfalls, dragonflies; everything you might associate with traditional Chinese gardens.

But just less than two decades ago, the same soil was the foundation to a very different environment; a lawless territory that was born out of Hong Kong's identity crisis and foreign occupation. A 6.5 acre plot of land that was home to nearly 33,000 people and a collection of brothels, opium dens, casinos, cocaine parlors, and secret factories. Kowloon Walled City, or Hak Nam...the City of Darkness.
Continue reading Dim Sum Dialogues: Kowloon Walled City

Dim Sum Dialogues: Kowloon Walled City originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 08:30:00 EST. "Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity" - Charles Mingus
There's a certain beauty in simplicity, even in regard to photography. I find this photo by lecercle to be a great example of taking simple subject matter and making it interesting and beautiful through composition & contrast.

The photo was taken in Kashid, which is a beach town on the shores of the Northern region of Maharashtra, India. The ocean that the subjects are looking out over is the Arabian Sea. There are a few of small hotels in Kashid, and the rest is privately owned, but it's quickly becoming a surfer's paradise.
Believe it or not, our Photo of the Day was taken in Kentucky -- at Mammoth Caves, to be exact. As Gadling photographer Peter Rivera explains, "A blast of arctic air flows up from the blackness. you go down concrete steps, lower and lower until the sunny August trees are left behind..." Peter aptly named this photo "descending into the abyss," and for those of you intrepid travelers who are venturing into the cool Halloween evening, I hope you come back from the abyss safely!
I've mentioned before that one of my favourite pastimes while traveling is eating. Oh my heavens, how I love to eat. There's just nothing like being in a completely foreign land, trying a whole new cuisine. It's like an adventure in every little bite.

For this reason, it sort of stuns me that while I've mentioned that food is one of those great iconic subjects for photography purposes, I haven't written yet about how to shoot images in a restaurant, or at the table where your hosts are sharing their meal with you. (And besides, here in the west, we're pretty much heading into prime gather-round-the-table-holiday mode, so the time has come, methinks.) So this week, I thought we'd take a look at ways to capture your culinary travel experience as effectively as possible.
Continue reading Through the Gadling Lens: 7 tips for photographs around the meal

Through the Gadling Lens: 7 tips for photographs around the meal originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 11:00:00 EST. That's exactly what Bryson Gilbert did when he snapped this photo earlier this year. With Halloween coming up this weekend, Gilbert's photo seemed fitting. The black and white treatment and the ominous clouds add to the eeriness. Would you want to be here after dark? What lurks behind those shuttered windows?

I know that I've got an unwrapped deck of NWA playing cards from a 747 flight before the airline merged with Delta, and others I've met have collected things ranging from silverware to barf bags to life vests.

Never, however, have I seen someone collect an entire first class cabin.

As it turns out, it can be done. Anthony Toth, a sales director at United Airlines has been working on his mock-up of a Pan-Am first class cabin for twenty years. Reconstructed in his Los Angeles garage with original vintage and reconstructed materials, the model is a near replica of the Pan-Am cabins from yore, down to the flatware, seat covers and almonds.

Right now he uses the $50,000 investment to host friends and colleagues from United, but some day Mr Toth hopes to turn the mock-up into a museum. With the broad legacy that Pan-Am has left upon the current airline world, it would be a shame for it to be used otherwise.

Check out the Wall St. Journal link below for actual pictures.
Man reconstructs entire Pan Am first class cabin in LA condo originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 22:30:00 EST. Talk about a gorgeous sunset! I must have said this before, but I'll say it again: I love Hawaii. I'm almost positive this photo's been enhanced, but I have to say sunsets in Hawaii actually look like this all the time. Really.

Last week a producer from ABC Nightline News contacted me about doing a story on the laviators - THE LAVIATORS! I know, it's weird, I can't believe it myself. But one of their corespondents actually happened across my blog after surfing around Youtube where they found people doing all sorts of bizarre things in airplane bathrooms. Of course I asked if he'd seen my video, 25 ways to use a maxi pad in flight, but he had not, so I emailed it to him right away. What he had seen, it turns out, was Michelle's funny laviator music video featured below.

"Michelle really stepped it up a notch," the producer said matter of fact over the phone.

"That she did!" I agreed. Then I added, "She's also the one responsible for getting the word 'laviator' into the urban dictionary! Now if only we can get the word 'lavatar,' as in a laviator avatar, in there as well."

The producer laughed, and then went on to describe the club as "hysterically weird" and asked what might compel someone to take pictures of themselves in the lavatory.

Honestly, I'm still trying to figure that one out myself, and I'm the first official laviator! Although I'm pretty sure it has something to do with boredom. Or maybe it's just exciting to do something a little risque - and weird - on an airplane. Then again, it could be all of the above. Who knows. All I know for sure is the end result is fun.

After pitching his story idea, the producer assured me he'd be back in touch. That was over a week ago and I still haven't head from him. Well that got me thinking. Let's have a best of the best laviator photo contest!

I just got back this week from a quick trip to a spa.

It sounds luxurious, doesn't it? Well, actually, it wasn't. Don't get me wrong -- the facilities were lovely; however, I didn't actually go to relax. I went along with a friend, Beth, who was giving a talk there, and while she was working I planned on working on several book projects that have looming deadlines ahead. When I wasn't writing, I was taking as many photos as possible for these same projects.

Beth has been a very kind fan of my work, and has flatteringly used the word "soulful" to describe my images. One afternoon, she asked if she could follow me around with her camera, to have an impromptu photo lesson. As we set off, she said, "Okay, so show me how to take photographs like you do."

"You want to know the trick?" I asked, smiling.

"Absolutely."

"Okay. The trick that every good photographer knows: before you take the photograph, look for the light."
Continue reading Through the Gadling Lens: Look for the light

Through the Gadling Lens: Look for the light originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 11:00:00 EST.

Today's beautiful Photo of the Day comes from Flickr user jrodmanjr. It's an interesting composition - the lush green hills in contrast against icy cliffs and sky, separated by a thin formation of low clouds. Having never been to Switzerland, this is exactly the scene that I visualize when I imagine the stereotypical beauty of the country.

The shot was taken in Grindelwald, Switzerland (pop. 3,760) - which is a popular destination for winter sports and summer hiking. A starting point for ascents of the Eiger (featured in the photo) and Wetterhorn mountains, the town has an elevation of 1,034m. Another reason you might recognize it? It was used as the basis for the view of Alderaan in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Weather permitting, this annual meteor shower will pass through the night sky in the pre-dawn hours tomorrow morning. Those in cities and suburbs will see fewer meteors, but regardless, star gazers should head to the hills (or country) between 1 a.m. and dawn local time Wednesday morning. Peak activity is expected around 6 a.m. Eastern Time.

The Orionids have been quite visible in recent years, with about 15-20 meteors within the peak hours, so find a comfortable spot with as wide a view of the sky as possible, allow about 10 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkeness, and let the show begin. The meteors will come from pretty much anywhere, but supposedly are concentrated around the Orion constellation (you know, the dude with the three-studded belt). There's really no use for a telescope or binoculars because these things fly too quickly through the night sky to catch them through a lens.

Depending on where you are in the States, it might be a chilly night, so wear extra warm clothes (or bring layers) -- even a sleeping bag or blanket would be a good idea.

Enjoy the show! And if you feel so inspired, upload your meteor photos to Gadling's Flickr pool.
Head to the hills for the meteor shower tonight! originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 20 Oct 2009 18:00:00 EST. He was prompted to write down his thoughts after visiting the Tiwi Islands in Australia. In the photo essay and interview in the New York Times, "Behind the Scenes and Still Wounded" Aaron Huey, who found himself drawn into the terrible beauty of the Lakota tribe of the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, Huey alludes to similar ideas.

It is impossible for people to develop an accurate impression of a culture in one visit.

Huey has spent the past five years photographing the Lakota who live in Manderson, one of Pine Ridge's most impoverished towns. This process that has developed friendships that are as close as family and an understanding of the Lakota that few have been able to attain. But, even then, Huey's experience has not brought him any closer to knowing the answer, "'Who are the Lakota?'"

As he writes: In many ways, I feel like it is not my question to answer. The Lakota are a people who have been wronged many times over. Coming from the dominant society and attempting to define them is a guaranteed failure for a white journalist. I have no right to define them.

Huey's photos and essay, along with Mike's musings, are a reminder that as we travel, we're merely picking up tidbits of what a place is about.

What I think happens is that as we travel, we're mostly finding out about who we are by looking through a lens of the "other." If we arrive back home with a better understanding of who we are through our interactions and experiences, we've done well. To really know a place and what a particular culture is about takes years--and even then, it may not make us an expert.

Reading the interview with Huey and looking at the images he captured in Manderson is one place to start on a journey of trying to understand the complexities of the Lakota. It certainly gives an insight into Huey.

(The Hamner Photos image was taken on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Click here for more of them. From what I can tell, they were taken as part of a work camp to build houses on the reservation, just a Band-aid to the poverty problem, according to Huey.)

I'm loving this shot captured by Bryson Gilbert, however -- the light and colour so perfectly convey the mood of a fun night out in Toronto.
