Anyone looking for a taste Caribbean colonial charm should head for Puerto Rico's Old San Juan. It's an area with loads of atmosphere - brightly colored pastel mansions, cobblestone streets, and a surprising street art scene. I particularly liked the bold colors and gritty charm of this photo in Old San Juan by Flickr user robertrexdotcom. It reminded me of my visit last year, wandering the quiet streets.

I wanted to find a good shot of clouds for today's photo, and I think this one reflects my mood perfectly. Clouds, to me, are good metaphors for life, and these clouds represent for me the beauty of life, the end of the day, and the dawning of a new day. When traveling through life, it's important to note moments when the clouds part and you can see things (your life, your surroundings, etc.) more clearly.

This gorgeous photo was taken by Patrick Powers in Orange County (which is another, more personal reason I chose it). The colors may be slightly over-enhanced, but the fiery effect of the photo is quite good, don't you think?

A close-up view of a building's features is one way to show it off its beauty This Buddhist temple's door is a perfect example. LadyExpat, who took this photo in Daejeon, South Korea, moved in for an intimate look so that the textures and nuances of the blue paint, the worn wood and the metal are a study of contrasts.
"Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity" - Charles Mingus
There's a certain beauty in simplicity, even in regard to photography. I find this photo by lecercle to be a great example of taking simple subject matter and making it interesting and beautiful through composition & contrast.

The photo was taken in Kashid, which is a beach town on the shores of the Northern region of Maharashtra, India. The ocean that the subjects are looking out over is the Arabian Sea. There are a few of small hotels in Kashid, and the rest is privately owned, but it's quickly becoming a surfer's paradise.
Believe it or not, our Photo of the Day was taken in Kentucky -- at Mammoth Caves, to be exact. As Gadling photographer Peter Rivera explains, "A blast of arctic air flows up from the blackness. you go down concrete steps, lower and lower until the sunny August trees are left behind..." Peter aptly named this photo "descending into the abyss," and for those of you intrepid travelers who are venturing into the cool Halloween evening, I hope you come back from the abyss safely!

I love how this shot from flickr user cmvoelkel is split into thirds by the tower of the Manhattan Bridge and the apparently happy couple. It also appears to be in black and white until you look outside the puddle and see the color on the couple's shoes. Taken in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, this is an interesting, really well-composed shot.

That's exactly what Bryson Gilbert did when he snapped this photo earlier this year. With Halloween coming up this weekend, Gilbert's photo seemed fitting. The black and white treatment and the ominous clouds add to the eeriness. Would you want to be here after dark? What lurks behind those shuttered windows?

Talk about a gorgeous sunset! I must have said this before, but I'll say it again: I love Hawaii. I'm almost positive this photo's been enhanced, but I have to say sunsets in Hawaii actually look like this all the time. Really.
Peter obviously used a long exposure to highlight the flowing water-a technique perfectly suited for waterfalls. Note how it bounces off the rocks, almost like light reflecting from a mirror.
There are some photographs that are the stuff from which novels are made--or if not a novel, a mighty fine short story--possibly written by Annie Proulx or Alice Monro. This stunning shot taken in Maine by justin fain is one of them. There's a moody quality to the lighting and the colors that immediately drew me into the scene. Although the shot is absent of people, except for the lone boat in the distance, their presence is felt.

The question is, would the story be a romance or a horror story? Would anyone be killed? Is the person who lives here waiting for someone who is lost at sea? Is there a happy ending? Oh, I hope so.

If you have a shot that's captured your imagination, send it our way at Gadling's Flickr Photo Pool to capture ours. It might be chosen as a Photo of the Day.

*I think the lighthouse in the photo is the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, near Portland.

Today's beautiful Photo of the Day comes from Flickr user jrodmanjr. It's an interesting composition - the lush green hills in contrast against icy cliffs and sky, separated by a thin formation of low clouds. Having never been to Switzerland, this is exactly the scene that I visualize when I imagine the stereotypical beauty of the country.

The shot was taken in Grindelwald, Switzerland (pop. 3,760) - which is a popular destination for winter sports and summer hiking. A starting point for ascents of the Eiger (featured in the photo) and Wetterhorn mountains, the town has an elevation of 1,034m. Another reason you might recognize it? It was used as the basis for the view of Alderaan in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Today's Photo of the Day pick comes to us from Flickr user Walker Starling, who's provided us with a beautiful example of macro photography. The crystal-clear detail of the flower in front is contrasted with the soft focus of everything behind it, creating a beautiful dream-like visual effect. The colors are great too: the soft purple of the petals, surrounded by clumps of punchy yellow and vibrant green all combine to create a beautiful landscape. If you didn't know it was a photo, you might be fooled into thinking it was painted by one of the Impressionists.
