And what better way to recoup from this most hellish of shopping weekends than by looking forward to a discounted vacation?

Shell's Vacation Hospitality's Black Friday Sale runs today with discounts of up to 50% off at 26 of its resorts located in Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire, Texas, Wisconsin, California, Mexico and Canada. Sample deals include a $79 per night room in Napa Valley, $84 per night on the Big Island of Hawaii, and $64 per night in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. There are some blackout dates around the holidays and the rooms must be prepaid and are nonrefundable.

Gap Adventures' sale runs from Black Friday to Cyber Monday and offers 20% savings on selected tours. 12 days in Laos can be had for $999 per person, 8 days in Thailand is just $479, and 20 days in India is only $1099. Over 25 tours are discounted, and include locations in South and Central America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Prices don't include airfare and are only valid on select departures in December, January, April and May.

Sonesta, a resort company that operates two properties on St. Maarten, is also offering 50% off for bookings made through Monday. The discount is valid for stays from December 18 to March 31. Stays over Christmas and New Year's require a 5-night minimum, but at just $138 (down from the usual $275), the total price is much more affordable.
More travel deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 27 Nov 2009 14:30:00 EST. I was pretty impressed by what I saw. While the resort is located right next to the Four Seasons, the feel (while still luxury) is totally different.

Rooms here are hale - thatched roof bungalows in various forms. In keeping with the barefoot, carefree style of the resort, the rooms don't have tvs, radios, or even telephones. What they do offer is total seclusion, privacy and romance, as each bungalow has access to a beautiful black sand beach and its own hammock. Hotel staff communicates with guests via notes, and a coconut is used as a "do not disturb" symbol.

It's the perfect spot for honeymooners to escape and relax, but they are also plenty of activities offered, like snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, whale watching, surfing and SCUBA diving. Rates for the hale start at $410 per night for two people, including breakfast and selected water sports.

Right now, Garden, Superior, or Deluxe rooms, which run about $700-$900 per night, qualify for a special fare deal. Book five nights in the room and receive $800 in flight credits. The room rate includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. The fare credit is applied to the cost of the room.

Dive packages, romance packages, and family packages (book one hale and the second is 50% off) are also currently available.
Continue reading Book a stay at Hawaii's Kona Village and get an $800 flight credit

Book a stay at Hawaii's Kona Village and get an $800 flight credit originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 14:30:00 EST.
I'm a sucker for a good mashup. RoomAtlas is such a service - it combines the power of Google maps with thousands of hotel locations. The map looks a bit like a Monopoly board, and shows the location of hotels, along with a color coded price, links to reviews, a thumbnail photo and a link to a booking site with even more details of the property.

Rates come from Hotels.com and Expedia, so you are almost always going to get the best available rates. I've been playing with the site for some time this morning, and absolutely love how easy it is to find a hotel where you want it, for the price you are willing to pay.

RoomAtlas current covers 53,000 hotels from all around the world. Prices can be displayed in US Dollars and UK Pounds.
RoomAtlas mashes Google maps with hotel prices and reviews originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 11:30:00 EST.

When it comes to lodging, most people automatically look for a hotel. And if you want room service, a business center, gym, and all the other perks that come with a hotel, that may be your best bet. But if you're looking for a more unique place to stay, if you want to save money, or if you want to experience a destination in an entirely new way, you have a whole range of options outside the sphere of Marriotts, Hiltons, and Four Seasons. Here are the top ten alternative lodging options.

Bed and Breakfasts/Guesthouses
A bed and breakfast (which in some countries, goes by the name guesthouse) is always my first choice for accommodation. Do I have a deep-seeded fetish for doilies, furniture that looks like it belongs in my grandma's house, and forced interaction over tea and scones? Definitely not. Luckily, not all B&Bs fit that stereotype. Many offer chic, modern décor and accommodations that are just as luxurious and stylish as their hotel counterparts.

The reason I choose these types of bed and breakfasts is this: generally, as it's a small business, the owners are very hands on and present. You don't feel so much like another anonymous customer as a welcomed guest. At bed and breakfasts I've stayed at, the hosts have been more than happy to sit down and give me personalized recommendations for the city I was visiting, to offer champagne toasts on New Year's Eve, and even to provide me with a ride to the airport when my cab didn't show up on time.
New rates from Watercolor Inn & Resort and WaterSound Beach put you comfortably on Northwest Florida's Gulf Coast for incredibly reasonable rates, and the amenities available are fantastic. Let the migration begin!

The digs you can reserve at Watercolor range from one bedroom to seven, all fully furnished and with upscale, cutting-edge kitchens and laundry facilities. And, for the workaholics, there's complementary high-speed internet access. So, you'll never have to be far from the folks who are ultimately paying for your getaway. Free bike, kayak and canoe use is available as well. But, that's nothing compared to what happens at the spa. Book a month-long retreat, and you'll be able take advantage of discounted treatments.

Golfers will be thrilled with their stays at these resorts. For only an extra $395 per month, you'll get unlimited access to Greg Norman-designed Shark's Tooth Golf Club, Camp Greek Golf Club by Tom Fazio and Love III, which was designed by Origins. That's a hell of a lot of golf at some outstanding courses.

Here's the best part: WaterColor vacation homes start at a mere $1,700 a month, with WaterSound Beach rentals available for as little as $1,200 a month. There's no reason to take off for only a week -- not with rates like these.

A month at WaterColor is cheaper than ever originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST. Instead of rushing out to the nearest big box store to do battle with the other crazy shoppers, pull the trigger by November 20, and get a trip to Keystone, Colorado. Book your stay for between December 19 and 26, and you could score rates as low as $101 a night -- 50 percent off the usual rate! The deal works at Keystone Lodge & Spa and the Inn at Keystone, not to mention the condos at Lakeside, Evergreen, Soda Ridge and Aspen Ridge (from studios to two-bedroom suites).

This is a sweetheart deal. For skiers, booking a room for Christmas week by November 20 is a no-brainer, and non-skiers can have a blast, too. Ice skating, dining and shopping are available, and the complimentary Adventure Passport provides free and discounted access to plenty of activities on and off the slopes.

Keystone offers a better alternative to holiday shopping originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. The Pierre is now among only 113 hotels in North America and the Caribbean. Set just up from the corner of Central Park South and Fifth Ave and with amazing views of the park, The Pierre is inches from any luxury offering you could possibly want.

Heiko Kuenstle, the hotel's general manager, says, "We are honored to receive this award in our first year of re-opening," which he describes as "a tribute to our staff and our pursuit of excellence." Kuenstle continues, "Our determination, from the moment we took over management of this hotel in 2005, has always been to be recognized as among the very best hotels in New York -- which of course is tantamount to ranking among the world's best. We say that with a full understanding that our job now only gets harder and that is to live up to the five diamond rating, every day and in every interaction with every guest."

Then you finally get there and discover the sewage pipe emptying into the ocean, realize that's a lard rendering factory across the road and that the artful brochure in the mail failed to display the tacky lobby that's loaded with cheesy art.

In a world of conflicting paradises, discernment is key. Given that tourism is Tahiti's number one industry and that there are literally dozens of "great" resorts to choose from throughout the islands, it's hard to pick just five that take the cake. Even so, here's an attempt to do just that.

This "Top 5" is not based on what's more elite, expensive, or exclusive, but focuses instead on the overall experience available to guests-from the drinks at the bar to the health of the coral reefs outside your door. The following five resorts are all situated within French Polynesia's Society Islands, which includes Tahiti:

Le Taha'a Island Resort & Spa
If you're going to fly to the other side of the world for sun, sea, sand, and palm trees, then do it right, people. The very best of French Polynesia is not found in the hubbub of modern-day Tahiti but out in the smaller, less-inhabited islands and the surrounding motu (small, sandy islets of an atoll). These are the islands you keep dreaming about and where all the newest resorts keep popping up.

The island of Taha'a is home to very few humans and several vanilla plantations, which makes this perhaps the sweetest-smelling place on earth. Throw in a well-conceived Relais & Chateaux property on an outlying sandy motu and it's pure heaven. Inspired by the va'a (outrigger canoe), the Taha'a's design is devoted heavily to Tahitian tradition, with hand-painted tapa bark cloth artwork and bottles of flower-scented manoï oil in the bathrooms (which you will be tempted to ungraciously steal). The exquisite over-water bungalows also feature giant picture windows with a romantic view of far-off Bora Bora, while the underwater coral gardens are healthy and loaded with pretty little clown fish.

You know who would love this place?: Margaret Mead and fans of Finding Nemo.

Downside: At $941 bucks a night, the Tah'a isn't catering to America's laid-off auto-workers.

Plus: If you want to splurge, at least this experience feels like a grand a night. The Polynesian seafood buffet is splendid, as is the handiwork of the in-house French pastry chef.

Babymoons are hot. Every major resort is looking for a way to get in on the action ... and why not? Moms-to-be are carrying all that extra weight, coping with the effects on their bodies and dream of a place where they can be pampered for a little while. Pregnancy massages take up the space between fantastic meals, and mom finds a bit of bliss. The guys don't lose with this arrangement either. It's a last chance to take a vacation and focus on the people who soon will be called "the parents," even by their own friends. Dad can have a few cocktails while mom sits in the sun.

But, eventually, it comes to an end. The car comes to the resort, and the revelers return to the airport, go home and resume normal life. It's all finished far too quickly, and in a few months, life changes forever.

What's interesting is that the babymoon may be over, but the effects can linger for months. After lying dormant for a while, they provide relaxing thoughts when you need them most - right after your kid is born. My wife and I went you ours around five months ago, and I'm still feeling the residual effects now. Of all the travel I've done this year, those four days remain the smartest.

Most travel writers focus on the immediate benefits of a babymoon. That doesn't do you much good when the kid has arrived, so here are four reasons you'll be happy you went on a babymoon, even months after you've returned from it.

Gallery: Guestrooms at Curtain Bluff

Continue reading Four reasons why your babymoon matters five months later

Four reasons why your babymoon matters five months later originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST. Tipping's a tough nut to crack. Should you tip a housekeeper? Back in the day, the rule was leaving some cash only if your stay was 30 days or longer. Since then, however, it seems to have changed. And, what's appropriate for a valet? Bellman? Skycap? Travel means tipping, and there are plenty of points at which you can expect to do this. If you go to the same hotel or use the same car service frequently, you may want to adjust your tipping habits, as well.

If these questions make you feel ignorant, you're not alone. Michael Lynn, a prof at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, has conducted to nationwide tipping surveys and has found that a third of the respondents don't know to leave 15 percent to 20 percent of the tab at a restaurant. Throw hotels and drivers into the mix, and it's unsurprising that the rules aren't understood as clearly as they could be.

So, USA Today and I are helping you know what to tip and when. A recent article by Gary Stoller provides some good ideas, and I've tossed in a few of my own.

We know it's coming. So, instead of waiting for the frost to form on your windshield, line up your next trip to the tropics now, and be ready to take off as soon as it starts to get cold. A new RockResort hotel is about to open in the Dominican Republic and is waiting for you to show up, kick back and soak in the sun.

The Balcones del Atlantico will be the second RockResort to open in the Caribbean, following the first, The Landings in St. Lucia. When it opens in February, the resort will boast 86 two- and three-bedroom villas that are integrated into the natural surroundings.

Paul Toner, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of RockResorts and Vail Resorts Hospitality, says, "Building on the tremendous success of The Landings St. Lucia, A RockResort, which opened two years ago, we were eager to expand in the Caribbean region." He continues, "We look forward to managing this island resort and sharing with our guests the iconic beauty of the Dominican Republic, and the exceptional guest service that RockResorts is known for at all of our properties."
During the Games, costs will be as high as the demand, but it seems that in the weeks leading up the event, there are plenty of deals to be had.

Right now though December 17, Whistler-Blackcomb, the official Alpine Skiing venue for the Games, is offering the third night free at many of its best resorts and hotels. The average nightly rate with the promotion works out to just $66 (CAD) for many properties in Whistler Village. Package deals that include two nights of lodging and two days of lift tickets start at $103 per person per night through December 21.

Travelzoo has put together a comprehensive list of the other discounts available in the area and the deals don't stop at accommodations and skiing. Flights, shuttles, and activities like snowmobiling are also on sale.

The games run February 12-28, and chances are they'll be even more discounts announced between now and then. So if you've got your heart set on a winter wonderland vacation in Vancouver but don't have a fortune to spend, plan your visit just before the Olympics to take advantage of these great deals.

Score deals to site of 2010 Olympics now originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. Solo business travel can be downright depressing. Even if you hate team dinners (and your colleagues), don't mind dining alone and prefer a bit of privacy, frequent individual business trips can turn you into a hermit. After a while, you socialize almost not at all, become intolerant of other people and seek out the types of conversation that can only be held in your own head. Along the way, you can become perpetually annoyed or even seriously depressed. The tendencies that characterize your personal life can invade your job performance, as well. Sucking at work can take a toll on your self-esteem, intensifying the problem. Before you know it, you're beholden to this toxic dynamic -- extracting yourself requires a triumph of the will, which is unlikely when you're trapped by the pressure of a seemingly inescapable situation.

Prevention is really the only course of action at your disposal. Otherwise, you're left waiting for someone else to notice the problem and pull you out of your rut. For lone road warriors, unfortunately, regular exposure to anyone is rare. Clients are most likely to realize the situation, but that's more likely to result in a call to your boss than to you. Your extrication from the perils of solo business traveler life thus could come at the cost of a ding to your career. To avoid this, you'll have to be, as the management gurus say, "proactive."

Your sanity and livelihood are on the line. Fortunately, you're inherently equipped to protect yourself, and the travel environment offers much that you can use. However, both your mind and the hotel offer plenty in the way of temptation, so try to stay on an even keel.

Here are six ways to ward off hermitdom for the solo business traveler:

Does 300 sound like a lot? It is. In fact, it's 12% of the 3,300 hotels that fly the Holiday Inn flag. The holdouts haven't begun to play ball with the brand's requirements, which include new bedding, pillows and towels -- not to mention modern music, a renovated lobby and green uplighting on the exterior. The total package is expected to cost around $1 billion.

Kevin Kowalski, brand chief for Holiday Inn, made clear how flexible the mother ship is willing to be: "We're not changing the timing." So, he told the owners of these 300 hotels, "If you have a quality problem, fix it." Not doing so by the deadline will garner the hotel owners failure letters. Sound relatively harmless? Their banks will get them, too, which could trigger some hefty consequences.

Well, Disney claims that title, but here's the problem: Utah does, too. If they were in different countries, no conflict would exist, but since they do, we have to sort this out.

A Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index recently released ranks Utah highest among all states in happiness. Just ask Robert J. Anello, a New York Lawyer who was staying at the lovely Ritz-Carlton, San Juan in Puerto Rico's posh Isla Verde district (shown). He was tied up in his room with lamp cords and a necktie just before dawn on Monday, and had $800 cash and his two cell phones stolen.

Associated Press reports, "Police say two of the suspects are women whom the victim invited to his room." A 17-year-old girl was reportedly also in the room, but has not been charged.

According to Caribbean Business PR, this is how it went down:

"'It was at his invitation that they gained access to the room,' said Capt. Samuel Luciano, director of the Police Department's Criminal Investigations Corps in Carolina.

'Then they apparently called the other individuals over to stage the robbery,' Luciano said.

According to published reports, the women tied Anello to a chair with lamp cords and a necktie at knifepoint and then let two male suspects into the room. The men then allegedly broke into the hotel room safe and swiped $800 cash, two cellular phones and four credit cards.

A third man allegedly waited outside the hotel in the getaway car. A hotel employee provided a good description of the vehicle and police nabbed the suspects a short time later."

Anello seems to be okay; he declined medical attention, but as you might guess, it's rough press for the Ritz-Carlton. As with hotels anywhere, they get their share of pool-crashers and other unwanted visitors -- it's to their credit that they were able to identify the criminals and help set justice in motion so quickly.

"The safety and security of our guests is our most important priority and we take very seriously the appropriate measures to protect the safety and security of our guests," says Verona Carter, a rep for Ritz-Carlton's Caribbean & Mexico resorts. They can't really help it when guests make poor decisions (like inviting shady teenage girls to their rooms).

All five suspects, Alejandra Alicea Candelario, 18, Emanuel Alicea Candelario, 21, Julio Alicea Candelario, 24, Francheska Agosto Ríos, 21 and Luis Agosto Ríos, 25, have been jailed, and a preliminary hearing is set for November 30.
Superstitious or not, if you're thinking about booking a hotel, you might want to wait until Friday the 13th to book.

(Is that like intentionally waiting for a black cat to cross your path?)

What can we say? That's the day that Hotels.com is discounting a lot of its properties by 50% in a Friday the 13th Sale.

Pick from about 200 properties, including locations in Mexico, Argentina, and the Caribbean. The Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago is going for $89/night (instead of $199), and so is the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco (instead of $170).

The sale is valid when you book a reservation on Friday, November 13th, and complete your stay by November 27th.
Friday the 13th: a lucky day for booking a hotel reservation originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 17:30:00 EST. Sure, it's a bit chilly up there in the winter, but bundle up, and it's impossible not to be sucked in by the charm of one of the oldest corners of America. If you're looking for a great way to maximize your spending power this Christmas (who isn't?!), check out five great ideas from New England Inns and Resorts. There's plenty of variety ... but little room for Scrooges.

Cut your own Christmas tree
This is a tough one if you're traveling any distance, and trying to cram a fir into the overhead bin will not help you win friends and influence others. But, if you're within driving distance, check out The Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit, Maine. The holiday package gets you two nights in an ocean view room and a fresh-cut Christmas tree from nearby Bragdon Farms. Fortunately, they'll wrap it and fasten it to your car. Back at the inn, you'll also get two hot chocolates and use of the sauna and spa - you'll need this to warm up a bit; Maine gets pretty cold.

Shop 'til you drop
At the White Mountain Hotel & Resort in North Conway, New Hampshire, you'll be close to the outlet stores (famous to anyone who grew up in an adjacent state). The package includes discount coupons to make the savings even greater, and you'll also get breakfast every morning (two-night stay required). So, instead of cramming into the local mall, dash off to do your shopping this year, and make it an experience worth remembering.

Continue reading Five ways to make a dollar go further in New England this holiday season

Five ways to make a dollar go further in New England this holiday season originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. It takes a lot of creativity to stand out as a hotel nowadays. Some hotels have upgraded their minibar, others added rubber ducks to the bathtub. Kimpton Hotels took a rather creative approach by redesigning the member profile portion of their site.

Instead of just asking for your name and email address, Kimpton makes it more personal by asking for things like your pillow and floor preference. The "MyStory" site is available to all Kimpton InTouch members, their free frequent guest program. By providing this information, you'll always have a more personal touch added to your room.

The InTouch program itself is rather generous, and awards you free night after just 7 visits (or 20 nights). You become an "Inner Circle" elite member after 15 visits (or 45 nights). In addition to free nights, InTouch members even get up to $10 free mini bar credits ($15 in New York).

Kimpton Hotels makes it personal with "MyStory" member profiles originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. With everyone tightening their belts, discretionary expenses like holidays are often the first thing to go. But industry leaders meeting in London for the World Travel Market say 2010 is looking better.

Cautious optimism about the economy is one cause for this brighter outlook, but travel companies know positive indicators such as increased productivity and exports don't necessarily translate to more money being spent on travel. What will also help is the shift to more budget travel options. Tour operators have been choosing budget airlines and more modest hotels in order to offer lower prices, and some budget companies have actually seen an increase in business. This trend will continue into 2010, experts say, which is good news for people who want to get away from it all without spending it all. An increased emphasis on budget travel will keep people moving and hopefully encourage them to choose more luxurious options once we get into another prosperous period.

The travel industry is certainly looking for a silver lining around the tsunami that hit it this year. A report released at the World Travel Market estimates there will be an 8% drop in global travel bookings this year, as well as a 14% drop in airline passengers and a 16% drop in hotel bookings.

With figures like that, 2009 will be an easy act to follow.
Tourism experts say discounts, economic upturn will make 2010 a good year originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 08:30:00 EST.
