Do you find yourself bored by the typical hotel's amenities? Butler services, organic mini bars and other bells and whistles just don't do it for you anymore? Well how about staying in a hotel with a vertical wind tunnel? And maybe after that you can unwind in the world's first zero-gravity spa? It sounds pretty out there, but those features are actually part of the plans for a Space Hotel in Barcelona, Spain.

The company behind the project, Mobilona, recently announced their vision for the complex, which includes a hotel, private apartments, a 24-hour shopping mall and a marina. All of this would be built on a Dubai-style, man-made island giving guests sea views no matter which way their room faces. A stay in the 2,000-suite hotel - which looks like something out of a sci-fi movie - would cost between 300 and 1500 euros per night.
Continue reading Barcelona Disses Plans For A Space Hotel

Barcelona Disses Plans For A Space Hotel originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 24 May 2013 09:00:00 EST. I've always found it a little odd that flight attendants still greet passengers, check their boarding pass and direct them to their seats (as though they might get lost between the galley and row 15) - but apparently we rather like that. According to the 2013 North American Airline Satisfaction Survey, passengers who are greeted by smiley airline staff register 211 points higher levels of happiness than those who aren't.

The study, which polled 11,800 passengers, rated flier satisfaction on a 1,000-point scale. It looked at everything from baggage fees to check-in to boarding processes and in-flight services to figure out just what makes air passengers tick.
Continue reading Smiles And Technology Make For Happy Fliers

Smiles And Technology Make For Happy Fliers originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 22 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Imagine hopping on a plane to go on vacation in Africa, taking a nap and waking up to find yourself in Bangladesh. That's exactly what happened to one couple after an airline mixed up their flight bookings and flew them 7,000 miles away from their intended destination.

Sandy Valdivieso and her Husband Triet Vo had wanted to fly from LA to the African city of Dakar, Senegal, but mistakenly ended up on a flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh. It turns out the mishap all came down to the three-letter airport code airlines routinely use when making bookings or entering information on baggage tags. Instead of entering DKR (for Dakar) in the computer system, the airline representative entered DAC (for Dhaka), sparking the intercontinental travel nightmare.
Continue reading Airline Flight Mix-Up Sends Couple To The Wrong Continent

Airline Flight Mix-Up Sends Couple To The Wrong Continent originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 18 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. If your frequent flier miles are languishing unused in your account because you keep coming up against blackout dates whenever you try to use them, then perhaps it's time to switch airlines, or maybe even rethink your booking tactics.

A survey by IdeaWorksCompany looked at 25 of the biggest frequent flier programs to figure out which carriers were best when it came to redeeming frequent flier points. Rather than filling out declaration cards handed out during the flight, travelers will soon use self-service kiosks to answer customs-related questions. The machines will spit out a receipt which passengers will then show to a customs agent, along with their passport and travel information.

Known as the Automated Passport Control Program, the system aims to speed up the border-crossing process. The new technology was developed by the Vancouver Airport Authority and will be implemented in the Canadian city first. It will then be launched at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, which will be the first port of entry in the United States to make use of the automated system.
Continue reading New E-Kiosks Aim To Speed Up Airport Customs Process

New E-Kiosks Aim To Speed Up Airport Customs Process originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 10 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. Accidentally leaving your digital devices turned on while flying is quite common, according to a new study.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) and the Consumer Electronics Association released a survey showing that close to 30 percent of travelers have forgotten to turn off their phone, ipad, laptop or other device before taking off.
Continue reading Forgetting To Turn Your Phone Off While Flying Is Pretty Common

Forgetting To Turn Your Phone Off While Flying Is Pretty Common originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 10 May 2013 14:00:00 EST.
Cosmetic surgeons in Turkey have been performing hair transplants on balding men for years; however, it seems there's now growing demand from men with bald upper lips.

Men from Asia, Europe and the Middle East have been flocking to the country in order to give their mediocre moustaches a helping hand and tourism agencies have taken notice. Many local companies have begun offering "transplant packages" in which tourists can get their surgery done before chilling out at a Mediterranean Resort or hitting the capital's shopping malls.
Continue reading Turkey Offers Moustache Transplant Surgery Vacation Packages

Turkey Offers Moustache Transplant Surgery Vacation Packages originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 09 May 2013 09:00:00 EST.
The carrier says colors like red or pink don't match the inflight crew's uniform, so wearing make up in those shades would "impair the visual integrity" of the outfits.

Instead, the airline says it wants its staff to wear pastel-toned makeup, as that would not only coordinate better with the uniform but also give off a more calming effect.
Continue reading Airline Bans Dark Lipstick Onboard

Airline Bans Dark Lipstick Onboard originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 07 May 2013 15:00:00 EST. The airline known for it's cheeky attitude and sassy flight crew announced they would be overhauling the uniforms for cabin crew and ground staff across the globe.

The carrier's president, Richard Branson, said he wanted to give his staff a look that would go against the grain and stick in people's minds. "Virgin Atlantic has a distinct spirit and from a
design perspective we continually try to challenge the norm and stand out from the crowd," he said. "Our current uniform has been around for more than 10 years and we have seen other airlines start to copy it."
Continue reading Virgin Atlantic Crew Gets A Fashion Makeover

Virgin Atlantic Crew Gets A Fashion Makeover originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 02 May 2013 17:00:00 EST.
Salvatore Francesco Bevivino was travelling from Philadelphia to San Francisco when he pressed the call button so he could order a soda. However, after the flight attendant arrived, she told Bevivino to use his touch screen to place a drink order through the plane's automated system. The 52-year-old apparently refused to do so and asked again for a drink to be brought to him.

The flight staff obliged, but upon landing in San Francisco Bevivino found himself being carted away by police. The airline said it alerted authorities because the passenger was cursing and refusing to follow instructions from the crew. They also claimed Bevivino left a bathroom stall without flushing the toilet.

The passenger denies using profanities or doing anything wrong (his lawyer referred to the unflushed toilet as a "non-event") and says he feels humiliated by the incident. He's suing Virgin America for $500,000 in damages.
Eating out three meals a day can do some serious damage to your travel budget, especially when you want those three meals to be as good as possible. Sure, you could self-cater to save a few bucks, but if you're a real foodie who wants to taste the best a city has to offer, how can you do it without breaking the bank?

Filling up on street food or tracking down food trucks are two tried and true techniques used by backpackers and budget travelers the world over, but those who want to eat at traditional restaurants cut their costs too. Here are five ideas for eating at sit-down restaurants on a budget.
Continue reading The Budget Traveler's Guide To Cut-Price Restaurant Meals

The Budget Traveler's Guide To Cut-Price Restaurant Meals originally appeared on Gadling on Sun, 28 Apr 2013 13:00:00 EST. I've always loved a good art gallery but I know not everyone feels the same way. I get it. Looking at still life oil-on-canvases isn't for everyone. But the good news is that some of the coolest art in the world isn't locked away in stuffy art galleries or museums - there are plenty of creative paintings and murals on the sides of buildings, along fences and across public walls.

Graffiti has been around since ancient times but what has really changed is way the many people now perceive the public scribblings. From a mark of gang culture and vandalism to a political statement to genuine artistic expression, graffiti has evolved with the times and is now accepted as "street art" in cities all over the world. Here are a handful of places known for their vibrant street art culture across Europe, South America and The Pacific.
Continue reading The Best Cities For Street Art Around The World

The Best Cities For Street Art Around The World originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST. In the hospitality industry, it's becoming increasingly common for hotels to remain open while they're undergoing renovations, or to open their doors to guests while they're still under construction. Known as a "soft opening," it's a way for hotels to recoup costs and train staff while they finish up the building. Usually, a soft opening means the hotel bar is still being completed or the pool is out of order, but occasionally you come across a hotel that has taken the concept to a whole new level.

Reddit user zxphoenix was shocked at what he found when he turned up at the Red Roof Inn in Brentwood, Tenn., this week. The first sign of trouble was the construction scaffolding, which enveloped the building on all sides. Despite the dubious appearance, a "now open" sign can be seen hanging from the metal framework. Handwritten cardboard posters direct guests from the boarded-up lobby to the "front desk," which is little more than a table wedged in a doorway. The hotel guest said of the three floors in the hotel, only one side of the first floor could be considered "livable." That's something of a relative term given that his room door wouldn't fully close, bits of construction debris blew out of the air conditioning unit, and the plumbing sounded like "a pig is being butchered in the pipes."

Continue reading Should This Hotel Be Open To Guests?

Should This Hotel Be Open To Guests? originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST.
First up, American Airlines announced that all of its flights would be grounded until at least 5 p.m. CT. An FAA spokesperson said the system-wide outage is the result of computer problems. The airline, which has been besieged by complaints via twitter, says it's working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile in New York, part of LaGuardia Airport has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found in the central terminal building. According to Bloomberg, emergency services and the city's bomb squad are on the scene but there are no further details regarding the incident at this point.

And finally in Boston - where security has been tight ever since yesterday's bombing at the Boston Marathon - an aircraft is under investigation. US Airways Flight 1716 has been stopped at Boston Logan Airport because of security concerns, although the exact nature of the threat is unclear.

All of this adds up to gridlock across the nation, with hundreds of flights grounded and passengers delayed, stranded, stuck on planes or unable to make flight reservations. The series of airline troubles come at a bad time for a country already on edge following yesterday's tragedy on the east coast.

Update: 4:04 ET: NBC News reports that a suspicious package at Dallas Fort Worth has been investigated and determined to be a small tire.
Long-distance train travel is making a comeback with Eurostar announcing plans to expand its services. The high-speed train, which primarily serves London, Brussels and Paris, has its sights set on new destinations across the European continent.

Eurostar says its entire system is undergoing an overhaul - from the booking process, to the routes, to the trains themselves. The company's website has been given a facelift in order to create a more user-friendly booking portal, and brand new uniforms have been designed for the crew. Updated trains are also in the pipeline and are expected to be up and running by 2015.
Continue reading Eurostar Revamps Services In A Bid To Lure Fliers

Eurostar Revamps Services In A Bid To Lure Fliers originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 16 Apr 2013 13:00:00 EST. A survey of British vacationers has revealed the lengths some travelers will go to in order to pinch their pennies, including lying and stealing, among other tactics.

One notorious strategy involves couples pretending to be on their honeymoon in order to score flight or room upgrades, with about 5 percent of survey respondents admitting to faking a special event so they could receive a perk.

Twelve percent of travelers confessed they'd used the pool or other facilities at a hotel they weren't actually a guest of, while 8 percent said they had used another hotel's shuttle bus.
Continue reading Survey Finds Travelers Will Lie And Steal To Save A Penny

Survey Finds Travelers Will Lie And Steal To Save A Penny originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST.
Few people can fly half way around the world just to see an art exhibition, and now, thanks to a new documentary series they don't have to. One company is set to bring culture to the masses by broadcasting major art exhibitions at movie theaters around the globe.

Much like a real trip to a museum, the documentaries walk you through a current or recent exhibit, pausing at important works along the way. A noted historian provides commentary and insight into the significance of the artworks, while interviews with museum curators and a backstage look at the exhibits round out the 90-minute films.
Continue reading Museum Exhibits Coming To A Movie Theater Near You

Museum Exhibits Coming To A Movie Theater Near You originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. According to a new study, air turbulence is likely to go up by 10-40 percent by 2050, causing more passengers to reach for the airsickness bag.

The report published in the Nature Climate Change journal says that clear air turbulence - a sharp movement of air that happens even in good weather - is likely to get worse in the coming decades because of climate change.

The report's authors studied the air over the North Atlantic, which is one of the busiest flight corridors in the world. They believe that as greenhouse gases increase, clear air turbulence will also rise - putting more planes in danger's way. What's more, this particular type of turbulence doesn't show up on an airplane's radar, making it tough for pilots to dodge. Planes that are given a heads up by other aircraft might be able to detour around the turbulence, but that would mean longer flight times and using up more fuel, which in turn contributes to the climate change problem.

But don't start popping the motion sickness pills just yet. Some scientists say the study isn't conclusive and believe there needs to be more research into the matter.
For budget travelers, there's never been a better time to visit the Greek capital. Despite being on the Euro, the country's debt crisis has made this popular tourist center dramatically more affordable than the balance of the European Union, making once expensive resorts now surprisingly reasonable.

As unemployment and other economic problems take their toll, Greeks have all but stopped taking vacations, which means most of the city's tourism bookings rely on foreigners. Unfortunately, many visitors have been scared off by the tide of uncertainty. Fears of a Greek exit from the euro zone and strikes and demonstrations in Athens caused many potential visitors to cancel their bookings - in the first half of last year, the number of tourists visiting fell 9%.

The silver lining to this distress is that for the budget-conscious, it presents a great opportunity. Tourism is the backbone of the Greek economy making up more than 16% of GDP, so the travel industry is bending over backwards to welcome travelers. Hotels, which lost 10-12% in profits last year, have had to drop their prices dramatically to attract tourists. Visiting Athens now means fewer crowds and better deals than ever before.

Athens is also the jumping off point for travel to the Greek Islands. Like the country's capital, the islands have also seen a reduction in the number of tourists and have had to lower their prices accordingly. As an added bonus, the strikes, demonstrations and closures that occasionally afflict the capital are not really felt in the islands.
Continue reading International Budget Guide 2013: Athens, Greece

International Budget Guide 2013: Athens, Greece originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 09 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST.
