Visualtraveling - 'Holy Cow' from Patrik Wallner on Vimeo.

Visualtraveling created this ten minute film piece titled 'Holy Cow' with footage from travels centered around skateboarding in South Asia. The documented journey took place over the course of a month. This video features, primarily, awesome shots of skateboarders boarding in cool places, doing neat things with their skateboards--the kinds of things I most certainly do not know how to do. The video also features non-skateboarding things. Stunning landscape shots, interesting architecture, bright colors, unique cars and other vehicles, and crowds of spectators complete this 'skateboarding' video which, like so many skateboarding videos, is equally functional as a travel video.

Continue reading Video of the day: skateboarding in South Asia

Video of the day: skateboarding in South Asia originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 21:00:00 EST. Now seems as good a time as any other to take a trip to Bali. To sprawl out on the sands and relax in the waters under the sun amid such beautiful culture certainly seems like a dream as the intensity and work load that come with every new year continues to pile. Luckily for all of us not currently embarking on a voyage to Bali, Andrew Melikov put this gorgeous 'Postcard from Bali' type video up on Vimeo. Complete with images of local artisans, droplets of water on blades of grass, crashing waterfalls, gentles breezes making the vegetation dance, children climbing trees and flying kites, this video effectively captures a vacation destination on film beyond the resorts wherein so many tourists find themselves confined.

Continue reading Video of the day: Bali, Indonesia

Video of the day: Bali, Indonesia originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 18:00:00 EST. Did you know that a Planters Nutmobile exists? It's a vehicle shaped like a nut and riding in it is the Planters mascot, Mr. Peanut. Mr. Peanut toured around the USA in this wacky vehicle throughout 2011 and I didn't even know about it. And I, of all people, sometimes feel like a nut. The vehicle is eco-friendly and unique. Complete with a recycled glass windshield, interior wood flooring sourced from an 1840 Pennsylvania barn, and solar panels on the roof, Mr. Peanut has been touring around in style, completely off my radar. Watch this video and tell me you too don't hope to catch the Planters Nutmobile on the road.
Continue reading Video: Planters Nutmobile: a peanut-shaped vehicle

Video: Planters Nutmobile: a peanut-shaped vehicle originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 15:00:00 EST. Austin-based serigraph artist, Tim Doyle, is currently participating in his debut solo show at Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco. For fans of Austin's Alamo Drafthouse, Doyle's work should seem familiar--he was a creative director for the theater's Mondo Posters through 2009. In 'Unreal Estate', Doyle explores pop culture locations through limited-edition, hand-printed screen prints and original art. The exhibit opened last week and will be open through February 23rd. You can rsvp on the event Facebook page. If you'll be in San Francisco this month, check this show out.
Continue reading Tim Doyle's Unreal Estate exhibit in San Francisco

Tim Doyle's Unreal Estate exhibit in San Francisco originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 13:00:00 EST. This footage of Disneyland 1957 was previously unreleased until recently. The film was cleaned up, edited, and paired with music, but all of the images are original. In 1957, the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California wasn't even yet two years old. The park opened in July of 1955. The best part about this footage is that it is actually good! The editing and overall cleanup job helps, of course, but the original filmmaker did a respectable job at capturing various aspects of the park and the young Disneyland experience.

Video: Disneyland 1957 originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 17:00:00 EST.
The Haight Ashbury movement may seem like a thing of the past. That's true or false, mostly depending on who you ask. But no matter how present the psychedelic spirit might still be in modern culture, its debut was art-altering, no one can deny that. That's why I hope the dream of the Haight Ashbury Museum of Psychedelic Art and History is soon realized. Tourists flock to Haight Ashbury in San Francisco as it is--maybe we should support giving them all a destination wherein they can view art from and learn about the Haight Ashbury movement in one, respectable place. Personally, I'm been using Pinterest to document my favorite pieces under the umbrella of 'Psychedelic Art' and, as a traveler, I'd love to see this sort of fixture in San Francisco. Admittedly, I haven't ever had that thought, either. But I'm happy someone did. That someone is artist Gwyneth Leech. Leech's newest project, titled 'Hypergraphia', is on display at the Sprint Prow ArtSpace in the Flatiron Building in Manhattan. Comprised over over 700 used coffee cups, each cup has been outfitted with original artwork. Leech can be seen in the space every Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 2pm. The exhibit will be running through February 18th. And here comes the part where I am bitter that I moved out of NYC because I used to walk past this building literally every weekday on my way to class while attending Baruch College... if you're in NYC between now and the 18th, make sure you stop to see this exhibit, preferably with a cup of coffee in hand.
Continue reading Used coffee cup art in NYC by Gwyneth Leech

Used coffee cup art in NYC by Gwyneth Leech originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 12:30:00 EST. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why the loop pedal is one of the best inventions ever: because an electric violinist, like Bryson Andres, can perform like this on the street in Portland. I like Portland--a lot of people do. I think Portland is a town filled with gems worth seeking out and substantial food, beer, art, and music scenes. The fact that the electric violinist street performer (loop pedal extraordinaire) featured in this video set up shop in Portland and played his heart out to Beyonce's 'Halo', even to the point of (apparently) drawing in the attention of another violin-playing street performer, makes me like Portland just that much more. If you don't have time for anything else today, make time to set aside a few minutes and let the talent this guy brings to the street brighten your day.
Continue reading Video of the day: Bryson Andres plays on Portland street corner

Video of the day: Bryson Andres plays on Portland street corner originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 17:00:00 EST. Austin landmarks in Austin High, the movie, aren't difficult to find. The city's tried, true, and loved spots make special appearances in scenes throughout the recently released, for lack of a better genre, stoner comedy. It's a comedy (and it really is funny, I think) depicting a community in support of the legalization of marijuana; a popular cause in Austin. I caught the film during the Austin Film Festival back in the fall. One of the things I liked most about the movie was that, for me, it really felt like Austin. The landmarks representing Austin in the film are good ones. So good, in fact, that I decided to dedicate this post to giving you the run-down of some of my favorite landmarks in the film. And so, here it goes, my favorite 10 Austin landmarks featured in Austin High.
Continue reading 10 Austin landmarks in Austin High

10 Austin landmarks in Austin High originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 28 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST. Then check out this gorgeous video featuring the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Projectors, 44 to count, came together form a combined brightness of 840,000 lumens. The images from these projectors covered a 600 foot wide and 351 foot high surface on the building. Mostly floral patterns were projected alongside filigree-type designs, creating a stunning imagery any visitors undoubtedly enjoyed. Were you lucky enough to see this display first-hand? Ever wanted postage stamp-inspired paintings? Molly Rausch can give you what you want, in that case. And even if you've never had an itch to acquire a stamp-themed painting with any cognizance, you might still want to check out her work. Rausch is an artist based out of New Paltz, New York. Her stamp art began 14 years ago when she received an envelope filled with foreign stamps from her father. Her paintings begin with an actual stamp and she proceeds to paint an image around the glued-on stamp. Since stamps are small, her paintings are, too. They're usually about 3 inches tall. After flipping through her work on her website, I have to say, I like it--it's a great concept. You might, too. And if you do, throw some travel-related art on your walls, courtesy of Ms. Rausch.
Continue reading Postage stamp-inspired paintings by Molly Rausch

Postage stamp-inspired paintings by Molly Rausch originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 16:00:00 EST. Whether or not you're a fan of Star Wars hardly matters when we're talking about the newest additions to the burger line at France's fast-food chain, 'Quick'--black buns on a Star Wars-themed burger, anyone? The 'Jedi Burger' and 'Darth Vader Burger' are now on the menu at the restaurant. And as processed as fast-food typically is, the pitch-black buns on the Darth Vader are what I would call a new low in the world of fast-food. Would you eat this? Perhaps I'd try it for the experience alone, but the older I get, the less I want to do gross things just to do them--and black buns on a fast-food burger don't quite seem non-regrettable to me. With that said, I will try just about anything once. What are your thoughts? Of all the things to eat in France, should this be one of them?
Continue reading Black buns on a Star Wars-themed burger in France

Black buns on a Star Wars-themed burger in France originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST.
Life might sway to a slower beat in the South, but, compared to other cities in the United States, Austin, Texas' growth over the span of the last decade or so hasn't been slow at all. Steady job growth and population growth have worked together in Austin to create a sort of surreal union between urbanity and rurality. A succinct but steadfast downtown area in Austin is only a couple of miles away from artists' communities developing on the outskirts of town. These communities are budding and blossoming a short bike ride away from the city's center, but these communities, like East Austin, are still rural enough that you'll find chickens roaming the streets and newly-converted living and work spaces being created from has-been barns. This is usually the way these things work.

Artists seeking more affordable housing in New York sought Brooklyn and found homes in vacant factories--vacant anything, really. With dilapidating real estate, supply often meets demand in communities that are attractive for one reason or another to creative thinkers--innovators. It takes a visionary to see the worthwhile in what's been neglected, and Austin seems to have plenty of visionaries. Upon close inspection, Austin's framework is still falling apart at the seams in some places. It's a safe bet that these abandoned and broken-down buildings will be renovated or replaced in due time, but for now, during an economic shift like the one taking place is Austin, these boarded up buildings belonging to abandoned Austin represent the transition of a city to me.
Would you like to spend a moment reviving your spirit with a beautiful video depicting Hawaii's Oahu Island? Oahu Island: Miracle Coast, is a gorgeous little video released on nowness.com. It's a short by photographer and filmmaker Lyall Coburn. Through the video, he captures a summer spent idly on the island's North Shore. The video is certainly enough to make me want to kick back in Oahu for a summer, watching locals take nerve-rattling jumps off of cliffs and maybe jumping myself. Life, for me, is much about variation and travel satiates this need I have, as well as so many others, for an ever-changing environment. Kudos to Coburn for changing his environment and spending a summer along these shimmering, lapping waves.
Continue reading Video: Oahu Island: Miracle Coast

Video: Oahu Island: Miracle Coast originally appeared on Gadling on Sun, 22 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST. If you needed yet another reason to add to the list of defensible reasons I am sure you already have for visiting Rome, the scores of Starlings in Rome each winter should make for worthwhile incentive. Nearly 5 million starlings pour into Rome during the winter of each year, taking spectacular flight nightly. Their chaotic aerial display is no accident. The Starlings dance this crazy dance in an effort to confuse the peregrine falcon, a nighttime predator. The iridescent plumage of the Starlings and illuminated by the sun, which you can watch in this video. The mesmeric waves formed by these starling flocks effectively confuses the falcon. But words can't do this extraordinary display justice and, for what it's worth, I'm guessing the video pales in comparison to the first-hand experience. Have any of you seen these birds in Rome or anywhere else (while their Rome display is beautiful, Starlings dot skies across the globe).
Continue reading Video: Starlings in Rome

Video: Starlings in Rome originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 13:00:00 EST. If you have ever been in a city building, preferably a very tall one, you might have looked out the window once. Maybe twice. Maybe more. And if the light was just right, streaming in at just the right angle, you might have caught the reflection of your own face multi-layered with the city skyline beyond. Just the right approach can yield a face-shaped skyline--a skyline image distorted by the body of the onlooker. If you have ever experienced this blissful phenomenon, then you'll like City Silhouettes. British photographer, Jasper James, has perfected his subjects' reflections on glass, against sky-reaching buildings. The images are breathtaking. View them on his website.
Continue reading City Silhouettes: reflections create unique skyline images

City Silhouettes: reflections create unique skyline images originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST. Of course you do. I do. I don't know if a last-minute flight from Austin to NYC will be worth the Boombox Party experience for me or not, but something tells me it just may be. So, suffice it to say that if you'll already be in New York this weekend because you're visiting or living there, you should embrace this new kind of impromptu party. What is a Boombox Party? It's a portable and battery-powered party, basically. Started by two guys out of Vancouver, the parties invite thousands of people to carry boomboxes around and dance. A DJ carrying an FM radio transmitter in a backpack has the boombox carriers tune into his master FM broadcast. The result is a mobile, synchronized sound system. The party can, and probably will, go anywhere and everywhere. Subways, city blocks, parks--who knows. The location for Saturday night is TBA, but it will start at 9pm. The theme is Strictly Business, meaning, of course, you must wear business attire.

Is this video of a singing and piano playing dog in Australia travel-related? Kind of. How? Well, I think this dog is a bit of a travel attraction. This musical dog appears to be taking the stage in a public place which gives me hope that myself as well as fellow travelers have a shot as seeing this awesome dog in person one day. This dog is a spectacle, but he's talented! Thanks to Tim Ferriss' recent Facebook status, I started my day off with hysterical laughter. His status read:

"Having a stressful day? Here's :30 of relief: "Meanwhile, in Australia".
I recently published a piece here on Gadling titled 10 tips for road-tripping with your dog. Somewhat chronicling my experience with hitting the road for 38 consecutive days with my 6 month old puppy, I thought through what made the trip work for me and compiled those thoughts into 10 tips for those of you enjoy the open road alongside your pooch. Luckily for me and all of our other readers, many of you chimed in, as requested, with your own tips through the comments. I was excited to read so much useful advice from those of you who are road warriors and dog lovers. So excited, in fact, that I felt a part 2 to my first piece was in call for... and so, here you have it, a list of additional tips for road-tripping with your dog, courtesy of the typing hands of Gadling readers who comment.
Continue reading Tips for road-tripping with your dog part 2: tips from commenters

Tips for road-tripping with your dog part 2: tips from commenters originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST.
