The pilot of the balloon was attempting to land on a beach, but wind gusts pushed the craft several kilometers out over the waters of Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne. In order to bring the 10 passengers to safety, the balloon was lowered to the water where water police had arrived.

Luckily, the rescue effort went smoothly and nobody was injured -- but the incident made for some very dramatic footage. Those aboard the balloon were able to put on lifejackets and easily reach the shore.

"We knew we could jump ship," one cheerful passenger commented after getting back on dry land. "We just wanted to save our snaps from the holiday, and we didn't want to go swimming. That's all."
Tickets are still available for this year's Bruise Cruise Festival aboard the Carnival Imagination on February 25. Sailing from Miami, the hipster-ific voyage will be a three-day gathering of indie rock bands (including the Black Lips, Vivian Girls and Thee Oh Sees) as well as their fans and DJ Mr. Jonathan Toubin. Passengers can expect plenty of live music, a day in Nassau, puppetry (seriously), and gambling.

The event promoters are also promising all 400 Bruisers (as passengers have been affectionately nicknamed) complimentary wine, "creative towel animals," and free entry to a cruise pre-party on February 24, at Grand Central in Miami. They're touting the intimate feel of the festival as being "a perfect escape from winter doldrums."

With cabin prices starting at about $500 per person (excluding gratuities and fees), the cruise is the latest in a recent slew of unique theme and festival voyages -- some of which, like the Jam Cruise, have attracted attention for all the wrong reasons.
Continue reading Bruise Cruise Festival 2011 Promises Boatloads of Alt-Fun

Bruise Cruise Festival 2011 Promises Boatloads of Alt-Fun originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 09:00:00 EST.
