For some reason I always have a severe longing for Europe when December rolls around. Yes, of course, it's cold and gray, but I miss the lights and sounds of European countries gearing up for Christmas. So when I went to look for today's Photo of the Day I obviously had a bias and therefore chose this great shot of the Eiffel Tower by Luke Robinson. I think it's fitting that he chose to do the photo in black and white; it fits the temperatures of the season. But at the same time, underneath the stark architecture and strong lines you can easily imagine the lively action going on down in the streets. I'm jealous of anyone that's currently there!

Have your own shot that you want considered for Photo of the Day? Leave it in the comments and we'll post it at the end of the series.

For me, traveling music has to provide a good background. It has to to flow with your up and down emotions, fit a variety of situations, but be distinct enough that it brings back memories when you return home. For that reason, in my last post I wrote about St. Germain, which is one of my favorite artists to listen to while traveling. Along those same lines comes Air, another electronica-inspired group that hails from France.

As I wrote about St. Germain, music like this immediately takes me back to living in France; I can envision the first time and place that I listened to either of these two groups. But Air is a little more than that, the duo's second album Moon Safari has become my traveling soundtrack -- no matter what the destination -- and my song of choice is Ce Matin La.

Continue reading Sounds of Travel 13: Ce Matin La

Sounds of Travel 13: Ce Matin La originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. Yes, you could take part in the hectic Christmas shopping frenzy, or you could put your money to more philanthropic efforts. That's exactly the goal of Passports with Purpose, the brainchild of four travel bloggers: Debbie Dubrow of Delicious Baby, Pam Mandel of Nerd's Eye View, Michelle Duffy of WanderMom, and Beth Whitman of Wanderlust and Lipstick. The blogging divas all decided that this holiday season it was time to give back, launching PWP to allow travel bloggers the chance to help raise funds for Heifer International.

Each participating blogger -- and if you're up on your travel blogs, you'll recognize many of the names on the list -- has gotten together a raffle prize. A $10 raffle ticket (which all goes to Heifer International) gets you the chance to maybe pick one of them up. Now, this isn't your standard school raffle with homemade baked goods and a year's worth of tree pruning; PWP prizes are something to get excited about. The list is long, but here is just a sampling:

3 Nights at the Wyland Waikiki in Hawaii

Mountain Hardwear Women's Mynx Jacket

Eagle Creek luggage

A collection of 5 Lonely Plant books

To take part in this great fundraiser, check out the full list of prizes, pick the one you want (or want to give to someone else!) and buy one or more $10 raffle tickets at FirstGiving. You'll get the chance to win something cool and, at the same time, help out an organization committed to building sustainable communities around the world.
Passports with Purpose: Travel bloggers fundraise for Heifer International originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 14:00:00 EST. Taken in Brecon Beacons, Wales by Theodore Scott this photo captures the peacefulness of the rolling hills and clouds, giving us a very relaxing image. Just a couple weeks ago a flight attendant was ruled too fat to fly, and of course the overweight passenger debate is always one that flares up people's opinions. There are two schools of thought. The first is from the view of the passenger stuck next to an overweight one who takes up more than their fair share of space; a lot of people believe that they should have to pay for a second seat. But the second opinion comes from overweight passengers themselves, who believe that they have a right to more space.

According to Reuters, today the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the direction of the latter, declaring that obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within Canada. The original decision had been made by the Canadian Transportation Authority, who claimed that people that are "functionally disabled by obesity" deserve to have two seats for one fare. The Canadian airlines went to appeal, but the high court declined to hear it, meaning that the decision now stands.

Do you think the official decision is a fair one?
Obese passengers in Canada have the right to two seats for price of one originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 15:30:00 EST. And now thanks to Google we have a new way of traveling not only around the world, but through time as well.

On Tuesday the Google blog announced that the internet company is making a LIFE photo archive available on Google image search. LIFE made a name for itself in the history of photojournalism, capturing many of the world's most important moments on film, but the really cool thing about this archive is that many of these images have never been published, meaning that we're getting to discover ones that have, until now, been sitting in old archives in the form of slides, negatives, etchings and prints.Twenty percent of the collection is currently online, and when they're done, there will be over 10 million images to search through.

What are some of the highlights of the collection? The Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; The Mansell Collection from London; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York and environs from the 1880s; and the entire works left to the collection from LIFE photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili, and Nina Leen. Even though train stations are popping at the seams with travelers during the November holiday weekend, airports are even worse. And this year is no different.

As a matter of fact, during this year's Thanksgiving and Christmas travel periods, airlines will operate about 2,500 to 3,000 fewer domestic flights than compared with the same periods in previous years. That means that one way or another, you're probably going to be affected. To visualize just how your travel plans might be impacted, USA Today's travel blog Today in the Sky has put together an interactive graphic to show how flight cutbacks by airlines could affect your travel choices.

The graphic can be used to find flight changes for select days from every domestic airport with flights to the following seven hubs: Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston (Bush) and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The map is dotted with red and green squares to signify fewer or more flights to the hub, making it pretty simple to see what routes are going to be more problematic. But if you're lucky, you'll find that your particular route has that great green box, meaning that you'll actually be able to take advantage of more flights to get you home for the holidays.

To check out the graphic for yourself, click here.
How will your holiday travels go? Although airports are full of people and constant activity, it's probably not on the top list of photography destinations. But in this photo, Tapeleg manages to find a creative angle to shoot a scene that travelers probably don't even give a second thought to. I think it's the use of lines in this view of the Denver International Airport, and the fact that there are no people in the foreground, giving the shot a very clean feel.

Do you have a shot that should be considered for Photo of the Day? The stereotypical accordion tunes from atop Montmartre embodied in the soundtrack of Amélie, the ballads of Edith Piaf, and the intense lyrics of adopted icon Jacques Brel (he was actually Belgian, but the French like him so much they seem to forget). But beyond those symbolic melodies that scream French roots, there's another side to French music. One that is much more urban, cosmopolitan and chic. It's the smooth, electro-jazz, slightly funky sounds of contemporary bands like St. Germain.

Continue reading The Sounds of Travel 7: So Flute

The Sounds of Travel 7: So Flute originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 15:00:00 EST. McDonald's, Starbucks, H&M, Coca Cola, Australia... Wait, what???

You read correctly, Australia recently won the top spot of the 2008 Country Brand Index. Nation branding, as it's officially referred to, is the theory and practice of measuring and building the reputations of countries; basically applying standard commercial brand management that you'd find with commodities and using it to analyzing everywhere from Austria to Zimbabwe.

The 2008 study conducted by Future Brand, a global brand consulting firm, used rankings from 30 different categories to come up with the final index. Among the categories were History, Standard of Living, Friendly Locals and Environmentalism. It's like a beauty pageant for countries, with the most well-rounded coming out on top. Here are the top ten:

Australia

Canada

USA

Italy

Switzerland

France

New Zealand

United Kingdom

Japan

Sweden

When you look at that list, referring to countries as specific brands starts to make a little sense. Don't we all have pretty concrete associations with France for example? Wine, croissants and cheese. And what about Sweden? Meatballs, moose and blondes. Looks like what we once referred to as stereotypes has a new name.
When a nation becomes a commodity: The Country Brand Index 2008 originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 16:00:00 EST. No matter what your political leanings are, we're all going to remember where we were on November 4, 2008. The momentous election of an African American as US President was watched around the world. This photo by pirano of various foreign newspapers all featuring President-Elect Barack Obama gives us an idea of just how "global" the American election was. The slowdown of the travel market and rising oil prices put financial strains on the airline a year ago, but now with the fall of the Icelandic economy, and hence the funds of the airline's owner, Sterling had no choice but to call it quits.

And although things are obviously bad for the airline, things aren't any better for its passengers: the halting of flights has left thousands of them stranded at airports across Europe. Sterling announced that tickets purchased online at the Sterling website would not be refunded, nor would return flights be honored. Coming to the rescue, rival airline Scandinavian Airlines announced that it would offer Sterling passengers and crew members seats on its flights to Copenhagen, depending on availability. But that will only help a small handful; all in all, an estimated 40,000 customers are said to be affected by the bankruptcy.
Nordic budget airline Sterling files for bankruptcy originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 14:30:00 EST. Secondly, the photo is strikingly simple, which is probably why arex rightfully titled it "The Simple Life". And what president is better suited for gossip than Monsieur Nicolas Sarkozy?

Earlier in the year he was the talk of the French nation for dating, and later marrying, ex-supermodel Carla Bruni. Now he's back on the international radar for threatening to sue a publishing company if it does not get rid of the voodoo doll created in his honor, according to the BBC.

President Sarkozy is not a fan of the doll, which comes with pins and an instruction manual that includes how to put the evil eye on the president himself. The doll is also covered in quotes -- which you can poke the pins into -- including "get lost you jerk" which Sarkozy said to a bystander who once refused to shake his hand.

You might think that this was a partisan thing, but the publishing company apparently likes to "poke" fun at both sides of the political spectrum; they've also produced a similar doll in the for of Segolene Royal, Sarkozy's Socialist party rival in the last election. She may not hold the same political ideals as Sarkozy, but she does agree with his stance on companies making fun of politicians: she is also threatening legal action.
Continue reading Putting the voodoo in French presidential politics

Putting the voodoo in French presidential politics originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 22 Oct 2008 16:00:00 EST. Not so in Thailand where recycling takes on new meaning at the Buddhist temple Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew, 370 miles northeast of Bangkok in the Si Saket province. Also known as Wat Lan Kuad, or "Temple of Million Bottles," the temple uses discarded bottles to construct everything on the temple site from the crematorium to toilets.

All in all there are about 1.5 million recycled bottles in the temple, and those at the temple are committed to recycling even more. "The more bottles we get, the more buildings we make," Abbot San Kataboonyo told Reuters.

Recycling doesn't stop at bottles; mosaics around the temple, mostly of Buddha, are made out of bottle caps. Besides being green, the recycled bottles don't fade, provide great light and are easy to maintain. Sounds like a pretty cool green location to put on your next eco-tour of Southeast Asia.
Green Nirvana: Thai Buddhist temple built from recycled refuse originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 16:00:00 EST. Taken in Bergama, Turkey, I appreciate the quiet feel of the street. Over at Concierge, Ralph Martin put together the article Deadly Hotels, perfect for the vacation where you want to stay in a truly haunted house. Although I can't say the thought of staying in a hotel where murders and famous deaths have taken place really appeals to me, 'tis the season.

Just where should you head for a freaky Halloween? Here are just three to get you in a spooky mood:

Hotel Chelsea, New York - The hotel is well known on its own, but it's also famous for being the spot where former bass player for the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, killed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. If you're a believer in ghosts, don't hang out in room 100, which is where Spungen was found dead on the floor with a knife wound in her abdomen.

L'Hotel, Paris - It's a classy boutique hotel nowadays, but once upon a time it was where Oscar Wilde came to die.He was quoted complaining about the decor, "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or other of us has got to go." Wilde's spirit might still roam the halls, but at least they're covered in new wallpaper.

Landmark Motor Hotel, Los Angeles - An LA trip wouldn't be complete without a stay in the place of a celebrity's last hurrah and this hotel happens to be where Janis Joplin died of an alcohol and heroin overdose.

Read about the other deadly hotels, which include the murder of an empress and a visit by the Manson family, here.
Just in time for Halloween: Deadly Hotels originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 16:00:00 EST.
