It would have been stupid to wait any longer no matter what country you're from. As long as you do these things as friendly as possible smile and apologize for your ignorance about the culture, rules, requirements all along the way. I know plenty of tico(a)s that pull this move when driving through city streets, in line to pay a traffic ticket, renew their cedula, etcetera. You are only a horrible gringo when you're frustration and or fear erupt in anger.
