The beaches outside Leon, Las Penitas in particular ARE great places to surf. see: http://playaroca.com, the drive on the new US sponsored highway from Leon is only 13 miles or 20 minutes and the beaches and surf are right out in front of the hotels, no driving necessary. Also has great wild life reserve called Isla Juan Venado, where turtle nesting is protected, but also have crocodiles, iguana's and birds galore, etc. just a 5 minute walk down the beach from the Playa Roca Beach Hotel.
Nicaragua is the largest but least inhabited country in all Central America, so the diversity is breath taking, from the adventurer to now the tourist, she's right it has come a long way.
N. Nicaragua doesn't get the hipe of the southern regions of San Juan del Sur or Granada, but it does have less people and more to see, it's BIG with rain forests to active volcanos and the largest stretch of non hassle beaches.
