I've not long came back from HK on a modest budget. The trick is really to stay as central as possible for cheap and just be prepared to avoid temptations of high street shopping. Food is really inexpensive and pretty much everywhere, The transport system is also cheap if you are prepared to travel slower, the tram is a really cheap option and is often overlooked by the MTR. The problem is avoiding such temptations, Almost every product and shop imaginable exists in hong kong x 100, Many products especially branded are similar to western prices, fortunately asia have learned to copy and sell identical products so a cheaper but less quality product will exist somewhere and i noticed most asian people buy the copy versions over the international brands which are twice as expensive. I would say travel with some shopping reserve money anyway or possibly a credit card just in case you decide to take a splurge and treat yourself. Hong kong is surprisingly abundant with wildlife and natural areas, If staying for longer there are many possibilities to explore the inner and outer territories and surroundings, Most places are accessible by MTR and/or bus but require some effort and patience to undertake.
