Glad you have the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park a try. Zoo's do alot of good work, if it were not for Zoos animals such as the California condor, American bison and others would be extinct. I'm a member of the San Diego Zoo and I feel good about supporting the work they do.
As for the comment from JSiess1, I think you might have the San Diego Zoo confused with another Zoo. San Diego Zoo's tigers live in a fantastic lush hillside habitat called Tiger River, (it opened in 1988), their lion also live in a new habitat with rocks to climb, shady trees and lots of logs and branches to scratch. Sometimes that cats pace when they know they are getting their dinner or perhaps a snack, I don't blame them.
As for the belugua whales you mention, I don't think San Diego Zoo has ever displayed whales or dolphins, certainly not within the past 30 years that I've been viisting.
