Travel Like A Boss: Onboard A US Air Force KC-10 Extender
During Air Force Week earlier this year, the team at Gadling Labs was invited out to witness a demonstration of the KC-10 Extender refueling four F-15 aircraft over the open sky just off the coast of Cape Cod.
We took a morning Air Train to meet the departing crew out of New York's JFK Airport. Manned by a crew of nearly a dozen, the Extender's mission is to refuel aircraft in flight, but their hospitality and attitudes on this day were just as awe inspiring. It was a great trip, and we're thankful to the folks in the Air Force who invited us along on their journey.

Pilot in the fighter, was like- "Thanks for the juice, I'm outta here". That was cool

Being on the flight deck of a plane being refueled is impressive too. The tanker people are totally professinal and clear concise comms between boom operator and pilot recieving fuel is critical. All too much of our ability to project power and to react to world events revolves around the men and women crewing those tankers.

Cathy, why are you such a commerical whore. What does your post have to do with this article? Absolutely nothing...go away.

The fighter pilot's rolling exit was very cool, but this report was lame. About 90% of it was an attempt to be funny, which it was not. Like most Huffington/AOL reports, most of the coverage is unprofessional, insipid, and devoid of any true reportorial skill.

Yep..for sure

A potentially cool package reduced to meaningless blather.

10 seconds of what was advertised, and 2 minutes of some idiot allowed to run around a KC-10. The AF must be hard up for advertisement. We need to do a little better.

How lame!!! This could have been interesting and showed how dangerous midair refueling is and how hard the aircrews work to accomplish it. Allowing idiots like this film crew to produce a report like this was a waste of time and increasewd the danger to the aircrew.

I agree Francess---anyone that has flown KC-10 as a space available PAX knows ou are not allowed out of your seat while refueling AND you are not allowed on the flight deck at any time
Russ Sykes Dec 2nd 2012 1:54PM
Weak! Very weak. Maybe you should stick to reporting on the Kardashians.
tom Dec 2nd 2012 7:20PM
hey! russy Baby: this article and video was great!

Paul:
I fly on KC-10 as a retitred veteran and space Available status. It is a whole different world in respect to free travel as a benefit. Take a look at the procedure on spacea.net or pepperd.com.
Come fly with us.

WHERE DO YOU FIND THE STUPID IDIOTS THAT PUT THESE SHOWS ON THAT SHOW US NOTHING BUT THE REPORTERS STUPIDITY ???
Barry Fennell Dec 2nd 2012 5:57PM
Those refrueling crews are a group of consciencious and dedicated professional airmen. This idiotic display of "humor" does nothing except to except to denigrate there work. In particular watch the boom operator ignoring the stupidity of the reporter. The flight deck crew has to insure that the flight path and all it's parts are perfectly aligned and along with the fighter pilot are also perfectly aligned. In particulary the boom operator has to make sure that that boom is inserrted into a 4 or six inch receptical so he wont't punch a hole in the aircraft. A group of aircraft crews do not need a sarcstic and stupid "funny man" rediculing the the work of truly profession people.

As an ex boom operator on the KC-135's its nice to see that the KC-10 boom doesn't have to lay down to refuel the fighter. Also nice to see that they have toilet seats now too.
