So good journalism is to compare a base rate earning option to something with bonus categories to make a point? Apples to Oranges already.
Next, why on earth would anyone settle for 2 cpm return on their award miles? Sure some do it, but it isn't a smart use of those.
Try doing this comparison with business or first class tickets and see where the scales tip.
Your headline is completely wrong and misleading. Yes a cashback card has its place and there are times to use it instead. But if your goal is "free" travel and comfortable travel at that, the mileage earning cards are hands down better. The key is to know what you want and work towards that goal.

Did everyone forget the miles you get for the actual travel involved? Need to factor that in too.
