As an attorney and a very large person I have serious issues with these policies. I have empathy for the person that may have to sit next to an overweight or even just a very large not overweight person (imagine NFL lineman size). Frankly it is illegal to discriminate on weight according to the ADA (American's Disability Act). Obesity is a health issue that is major problem and many people cannot, despite all efforts, to lose weight. To say to an overweight person that you have to buy an extra seat would be the same as saying to a disabled person that requires additional room for necessary medical equipment or a person in a cast that requires additional room that they would also be required to buy an additional seat and that is fundamentally wrong as well as illegal. I have been skinny and overweight so I know both sides of the argument.
The bottom line is the airlines should be required to have a certain number of oversized seats for large passengers. Frankly, even the typical seats on a plane are too small for any person that isn't under 5'10" and 160 pounds. The airlines, as stated before are behind the times.
I have never had to buy and additional seat while flying... even at the hint of them making the argument I cut them off and inform them that I am an attorney and unless they want a lawsuit they better do the right thing and make proper accommodations. Once that was said I have never had to go farther than the threat of legal recourse. They KNOW it is illegal but unless a person is aware of their rights they will trample you. I don't mind (pun intended) throwing my weight around as a lawyer since too many large corporations will try and force garbage like this down your throat any time they can.

Thank you for this information. It's good to have since I not only have weight issues from years of taking high doses of prednisone, but there are times I have needed a walker due to my bones crumbling.
