I think the whole thing is rediculous. MOST Americans are over weight and even those who are not would prefer a wider seat so they are not right up against the next person. Just lose a row of seats, extend the width of the rest of the seats and EVERYONE will be happier. They don't even have to increase the fare. Those airlines offering wider seats for ALL will get more business than they can handle, thus more revenue. If I owned an airline, I would want my customers to have the most pleasant, comfortable experience they ever had because I know they would come back.(key words - COME BACK) As for babies and small children, get over it. Babies cry to express their needs and small kids get fussy. The airlines could offer kid friendly movies on any number of hand held devises, which would make a big difference between restlessness and fun. If the airlines would be concerned for their customers than filling their pockets, their pockets wiould get filled much faster.

If they did that, they WOULD hike the fare and then EVERYBODY, regardless of size would have to pay more. Just make special planes for those heavy duty people and charge THEM more! That extra weight also weighs the plane down for those of you who don't know that.

Are you freaking kidding me? You must be speaking of all of those issues because you are a ignorant American and that makes it your right to crap on everyone around you. How over weight are you? Learn to be responsible to those around you and in your community. No one owes you anything and fat is not a disability!
Airlines should operate for free to make you happy! WoW!!!!! They are not in the business of satisfying fat people at the expense of everyone else that fits in their seats. Buy a seat in first class or lose a 100 lbs.
