I think people who "spill into" the seats that others pay good money for should have to buy another seat, or pay extra for it. I once flew from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta hanging out in the aisle because the person next to me was so large. If it hadn't been such a short flight -- and if I didn't feel sorry for the person next to me -- I would have flagged down a flight attendant and demanded a refund. I do think there should be an exception for people flying next to family, though.
I'm glad Delta does something about it because they have the smallest seating space in economy of any airline I've flown.

Studies show that members of a household tend to weigh about the same (although there are of course exceptions). So at least half the time, to get this exception, you'd put two people next to each other who spill over their seats so much they can't put the armrest down -- how would that work?
