Ghosts Of War: Photographer Overlays 'Then' And 'Now' Photos

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. They also say that a photo can capture a memory. Which partially explains why we're so fascinated by photographer Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse's haunting overlays in the "Ghosts of War" series (see her Flickr and Facebook pages here), which takes images of locations today and overlays them with people-filled images from World War II. The series showcases locations in France, Auschwitz, Poland, Germany and Amsterdam.
Dutch historian Teeuwisse found negatives at an Amsterdam flea market and had the idea to begin this series, the Daily Mail reported. Each photograph and location is researched before being put together. We're fascinated by the idea of seeing modern-day locations in historic and haunting context.

Awesome photos, what a cool idea! I have never seen this before. Were the soldiers actually in these same places at the time the photos were taken?
I'd love to see more of these.
Cheers.

Be careful, France might think they are being invaded again and immediately surrender.

Very cool idea...may want to draw the current POTUS attention to them, remind him of the sacrifice of Americans in the liberation of France. He might stop apologizing...
Enjoyed these allot, thanks.

Cool photos. I actually have been doing this technique with my photography since I published my book, "Ghosts of the Field, America's Most Hallowed Grounds, Yesterday & Today" in 2003. My photos involve the American Civil War.

I am getting ready to release my follow-up volume next Spring and was surprised to see this story. I've always wondered how the technique would work with all the photos from WWII, I'm glad to see it looks great.

Magnificient idea and an absolutely chilling affect of transporting through time. It is really mind bending, especially seeing the vehicles of today along side the soldiers.

Haunting yet beautiful. I'd like to see more of these in the future. Perhaps some from different wars. That way these boys will always be remembered for their sacrifice.

These are incredible shots and I have similar pictures (not superimposed), over 130 photos taken from WWII, oversees, ships, land troops, air attacks and so on. These pictures are a collection my father kept from his time in the service. He was a WWII veteran, D-Day 2. These incredible photos depict so many scenes like combat war scenes, bombing buildings, tanks moving through the streets, Cities in Germany, and most incredibly pictures of political figues like Winston Churchill, General Patton and Charles DeGaulle, and so many others. Also, countless pictures of solders from many walks of life in many scenario's some very sad. I am not sure what to do with them...
