Not more than a week ago, I visited the small village in southern Italy in Calabria where my paternal ancestors came from. High up in the mountains, I felt a deep connection, as mountains have always called to me. It's as if it's wired into my DNA. There is only one family in the town that shares our last name, and through genealogy records, we are 99.9% sure they are distant cousins. Just walking the street where my ancestors lived was a very humbling experience, thinking about the lives they lived, and the hardships that would cause them to leave their beloved home behind to relocate to a "strange new land."
