Well you're solution for municipalities to solve their budget crisis is to have bars and restaurants on the beach. This would help the elderly because they won't have to carry their chairs and coolers down to the pristine beaches. This would also help to keep the bottom of the steps leading to the beach clear. This would help you to get to your favorite spot since the people would be spread out more. I suppose you also want the Grand Canyon to have bleachers set up so all seats would be good seats?
There is one option, you don't have to drag a chair or cooler out on the beach, it's optional. Why do people have to bring half their home to the beach any way? How about when we go visit what little bit of untouched nature we have left, we go to enjoy the nature. I know, a beach filled with people and their chairs, coolers and beach towels is far from untouched nature, but what we have is a lot better than what you suggest.
Here in Michigan, almost all inland lakes are surrounded by cottages and homes. Even though our taxes support upkeep of these lakes, we are usually limited to a small public beach and a boat ramp. If we allowed the cabana's and little beach bars all along the beache's, well good-bye to your nice pristine beaches. There would be cups all over the place, and the chairs would be stolen each night.
I would suggest that if that is really how you like the beach, you can always travel over seas when you want to go swimming. I know that's not feasible, but unlike you, I think there is too much commercialism here in the States. If we allow your cabanas and little bars on the beach, how long do you really think it would take before there would be MacDonalds and Walmarts right across the street. If we did your beach thing, we would have to put a Dairy Queen and McDonalds in the National Forest so those that get hungry or want a little snack won't have to lug their coolers and BBQ equipment.
All I ask is for people to leave our dwindling natural resources be. I like the beach the way it is, and for that matter I also like the National Forest the way it is. Let's not suggest putting a Dairy Queen in the forest so that the little one''s can have a snack. I'm sorry for sounding rude, but you sound like the person that when they go on vacation, they take everything along with them.
Andrew, I agree with you, but I think the author is referring to having bars and cabanas on the beach like you would see in old films like "To Catch A Thief" starring Cary Grant. They would serve you like in a bar or restaurant. He also wants ice cream trucks driving up and down the beach selling ice cream.
