I'll second the McDonald's WiFi - they're everywhere. Also, many of the libraries have free access. Just bring your pad or laptop, sit in the comfy lounge area, and log on.
By all means, rent a car if you can. There are just so many things to see and do that are slightly off the beaten path. Having said that, when in the city, park it and walk. You'll discover so much you'd miss otherwise.
And do check out the motels. Even if they are part of a chain, the owner/operators are on premise and they'll do everything they can to make sure you have a great stay.
