I spent 2 months there and my top tips would be:
1. To head to McDonald's for free wi-fi. Well, you'll have to buy something, but at least you know that every single one has wi-fi and if you fancy a coffee anyway...
2. Camp and make use of the free or minimal fee campsites managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). Pick up a brochure with listings in tourist offices.
3. Get some grub from the supermarket and cook up a storm on one of the free BBQs in many public parks. Our most scenic one was by the shores of Lake Wanaka - perfect!

These are awesome tips, thanks! I forgot about the free BBQs, very cool! Camping was kind of out in winter (and with a crawling baby) but would definitely do it on a future summer trip.
