I wouldn't say that the south is going through the same sort of 'industrial revolution' as what happened in places like Detroit 50+ years ago. That first wave hit the south not long after other cities: it just wasn't with cars. Manufacturing is a staple of the south and there is a trend down here of blue collar workers making as much as brethren with white collars.
That being said, it is nice to read write-ups of the south from someone who did more than fly in and get a tiny dose.
