Video: A Crash Landing From The Pilot's Point Of View
Talk about a crash landing. While flying over Cleveland National Forest, Larry E. Hockensmith, a student glider pilot and licensed power pilot of almost 40 years, thought he was going in for a smooth landing. Unfortunately, he didn't notice the nearby mailbox, which caught the right wing of the sailplane about 8 inches from the tip.
While many would be embarrassed about the guffaw, Hockensmith instead is choosing to own up to his mistake of lingering on the "lee-side of a ridge over rough terrain," and to make the crash into a learning experience. Not only did his soaring club host a safety meeting where they watched the full 16-minute video and participated in discussions, but Hockensmith also posted the video to the YouTube community, asking them how they thought the differences between the training of a power pilot and glider pilot could have affected the outcome.
"Going into that turn I wanted to make sure I did not stall and added a bit too much airspeed," Hockensmith explains. "Next time, hitting the spoilers, dropping airspeed and putting the skid down fast might produce a better outcome."
If you found this interesting, the pilot will be posting more videos on this in the near future. You can click here to follow his YouTube account.

Why is he landing on the road?
LtDan Jul 13th 2012 2:20PM
Because it was reasonable and smart to not hit a tree or a house. He did an outstanding job of minimizing the damage!

As a glider owner and pilot, when the uplift is gone and you are far away from the airport and alltitude is deminishing you do what you have to do. Pure and simple.

NO Excuse HE was NOT out of fuel!!!!!! And he was NOT out of control. And he was not registered with DMV. I am not even sure if he could pass the emissions test!! BUT Seriously, NOWHERE do I routinely see Gliders landing on the road. Also Seems to me he came in at an angle that was ridiculous could he have possible come straighter down the road and maybe stayed in the middle?

I think the man did very good considering the few choices of a really "clear" place to set it down, he walked away from it , so really it wasn't a big deal . He at least didn't end up into someones house etc like most powered aircraft do , and he was "unpowered " so again he did good !

Forgive my ignorance but that sure looks like a residential street to me, wouldn't an airport have been a better place to land?, you must have taken off from an airport. Just guessing but you went off course and were too far away to return to the airport?

Its a glider and he ran out of air life and had to come down. There is no engine to give him power, he was on his way down and no way to get back up. Did you not know that it was a glider? He had been flying for awhile and lost the wind and risers so he had to come down.

HE WAS DARN LUCKY!!!
LtDan Jul 13th 2012 2:20PM
Luck is maybe 50% Flying skill is most of it. He did good.

The great Jambo Keyloque predicts a new mailbox and trash can in the near future.

EMERGENCY IN GLIDER OPS?
WHAT WAS THE NATURE OF THE EMERGENCY? PILOT GOT LOST AND OUT OF REACH OF PROPER LANDING SITE?
jon Jul 14th 2012 8:42AM
I would like to know the circumstances of this flight...how did he get so far off track from his airport base? Where there no other options straight ahead instead of a low turn to the right? I don't want to second guess the pilot, but if had 40 years experience flying powered aircraft, his situational awareness and judgment appear to be lacking, I'm sorry to say.

Why are they saying that is a crash landing?! Isn't that how those gliders always land?
al pambuena Jul 13th 2012 1:34PM
would never try to second guess somebody making an emergency landing, especially in a glider...they are there and i am not, and he or she, only has so much time and space, to figure out what to do. they walked away from the crash, and nobody else got hurt, so as far as i am concerned, it was brilliant.
Seriously Guys? Jul 13th 2012 1:49PM
Seriously? people ask the most stupid questions. Why is he landing in a residential neighborhood? REALLY!? I suppose its because he wanted to crash into the trash bags on the side of the rode. Why was he landing on the road? BECAUSE HIS PLANE WASNT WORKING PROPERLY!
ta ta toothy Jul 13th 2012 2:29PM
It's not a stupid question at all. The way the article is written it clearly implies that the residential street was his intended landing spot and that the only reason a crash landing resulted was because his wing hit the mailbox. Your beef should be with the dope that wrote the misleading article.....not the one who asked a valid question.

Can we stop with the "seriously?" and "really?" comments? It's 2012.
Bill Jul 13th 2012 1:59PM
That was a crash landing? There is this new thing out called an "airstrip." In the video, I think that was a "plane." I'm pretty sure planes use airstrips.
carol caprio Jul 13th 2012 2:03PM
In a glider, EVERY landing is a crash landing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hindsight Jul 13th 2012 2:04PM
Any crash landing you can walk away from is a good one.
