Platanias is the Blackpool of Western Crete; and it's full of tourist tat and people who drink as much as they can in all inclusive hotels; but move a few kilometers in either direction, and it's a different story.
Chania itself is charming in places and very cosmopolitan; whist heading toward Kissamos you come to Tavronitis first, a peaceful village with a long pebble beach and a couple tavernas selling good food at reasonable prices.
In fact the two mile stretch of Platanias is, with the exception of Malia in the east, the only noisy spots in Crete. It's true that there are some unpleasant people around at the moment, but they shouldn't be taken as being indicative of what you find in the area - at least not since 2008, when I moved here with my wife.
