This Photo of the Day comes from Gadling Flickr pool member James Wheeler who captured this image titled "Fish Ladders" in Cowichan Valley, British Columbia, CA, using a Nikon D5000.

James describes the image as, "Some fish ladders for the salmon to head up river for spawning on a river near Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island."

Fish ladders give migrating fish a detour route so that they can get over or around a dam that's blocking the way.
