Amazing Photos Of Uzbekistan's Desert Ship Graveyard

A relentless sun bakes down upon the desert sands near the Uzbekistan city of Mo'ynaq, sending shimmering waves of heat and swirling dust clouds floating skywards. As the scarce few travelers who have traversed this most barren and isolated of landscapes will tell you, it's probably the last place on earth you'd expect to find a flotilla of abandoned ships. Except this isn't a mirage – you've reached the Graveyard Ships of Mo'ynaq, a surreal collection of rusting fishing vessels in Uzbekistan, stranded nearly 100 miles from the nearest shoreline.
How on earth did this strange sight come to pass? The story starts back in the 1980s, when Mo'ynaq was a thriving fishing village situated on an inland lake connected to the Aral Sea. As the USSR diverted the water for use in irrigating massive cotton fields, the lake dried up, leaving Mo'ynaq's boats high and dry (and the villagers with no way to make a living). The strange collection of boats left behind is both a ghostly beautiful scene and a chilling reminder of the damage too-easily wreaked by careless use of water.
Check out a gallery of photos from the graveyard below to take a closer look.

The Earth was covered in water once upon a time, and land masses have shifted, ocean levels have risen and fallen over millenia, so it should be no surprise to anyone to find ocean artifacts anywhere on Earth.

There are sea shells in the Palm Desert because it used to be under water. True of many places in the West. The land rose up.

Caused by "... careless use of water"????
Egad, make the proper point. It was caused by an overly powerful and arrogant central government that knows better.

Before anyone casts a stone at Russia for diverting the water, take a look at the Rio Grande in the vacinity of El Paso, Texas. There is only a fraction of the water flowing in the river compared to what was flowing there before the US diverted water. Florida is another disaster waiting to happen with all of the water being sucked out of the ground ultimately causing their sinkholes. Western MA lost whole towns to create Quabin Reservoir but now it is estimated that almost 50% of the water transported to Boston is lost through leakage in the old pipes.

In Bakersfield, California you can dig at Shark Tooth Mountain (really a hill) for fossils, like shark teeth, vertibrae, and other creatures, etc. This used to be covered by a sea.

why some people are such haters? Besides, it's not Russia, it's Uzbekistan, totally different country, at least educate yourself before embarrassing yourself.

It was not a separate country when the decisions which caused this environmenta destruction were made. It was part of the Soviet Union. The decisions were made in Moscow.

Don't let this happen to The Great Lakes. Several Western States want that water for their lawns and golf courses.

The fishermen could have moved their boats -- and their families -- BEFORE the lake dried up.
