When I was in Russia last fall, I was glad that I looked like a tourist. The locals tried to help me, even though they did not speak English. I read Russian (slowly) and when people on the Moscow subway saw me struggling, they offered me help. Throughout the trip, I got the feeling that the locals were happy to have me as a tourist.
On trips to Finland, I found that people managed to communicate with me even though we knew only a couple of words in each other's language. The locals acted like dealing with tourists was a natural thing to do, and dealt with us comfortably.
