Hey it's just an engine cover. Same as the hood of your car. The engine doesn't need it. Calm down people. Calm down. And besides... TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONICS!! :-)

If engine covers are not needed, then why not just manufacture power plants without covers ?!

this is made to protect the engine of the plane from dust, cold, birds, the sun. like a car, the engine must be protected. The design its also important and make no sense this part made without protection. I´m from brazil and to me it´s very funny to hear the sreaming of the passagers. They realy don´t know anything about mecanics and some of them go crazy after the incident.

engine cowlings are very important ,if you experience an engine fire
the cowlings are designed to contain the fire and limit the oxyagen when
discharging the fire bottles ,no cowlings no fire containment no arriving
final destaination as for me ill take the cowlings

Hood of a car is on the ground, cowl/covering of a plane is flying up there. For a car you can come to a stop for a plane hope nothing hit the naked engine in the air.

Patrick forgot to validate the authenticity of his statement by revealing that he is and aeronautical engineer/plane mechanic.
I get so tired of people making statements they pull out of their butts.
