I don't know who is paying this writer, but a "payoff" is the ONLY way that anyone would write that St. Croix was a "paradise". I've worked and lived there, fled the island to keep from killing some crackhead on the street, and returned a couple of times post-Hugo - this island is a welfare state dump of a place. It's so bad that nearly ALL of the cruise ships have stopped going there. The towns of Frederiksted and Christensted are ghost towns. The Cruzans don't want tourists or mainlanders there because if it becomes a popular tourist or retirement destination, then everything will get more expensive, and their food stamps and welfare checks won't go as far - too much of an impact on their FREE standard of living. Last time I was there I even saw some of Obama's "stimulus" money at work, our tax dollars paying for road improvements that were NEVER going to be finished.
