Allegiant Air To Start Charging For Carry-Ons
Las Vegas-based, low cost carrier Allegiant Air will begin charging for carry-on bags as of Wednesday, April 4.
"Allegiant will begin charging for carry-ons for travelers booking new reservations beginning Wednesday (it will go live on our website late Tuesday night PDT)," said Jessica Wheeler, public relations manager for Allegiant, as confirmed by AirlineReporter.com.
This is policy the company has been considering since spring of last year.
A fee schedule has not yet been released, but an internal memo to employees says that paying for carry-ons at the airport will be about $35 and that advance payment online will be between $15 and $29, about on par with the airline's checked bag rates.
This can't be a popular move, even for an ultra low cost airline. Sound off in the comments below.

I've always felt that it should the other way around. Where passengers pay for carry-ons and don't pay for checked bags. I understand that the checked bag system utilizes numerous personnel and expensive baggage sorting equipment, but I think passengers would much rather be able to store a bag that they're actually going to open at some point on the flight in an overhead bin without having to wrestle someone who isn't going open their bag once for a spot. Maybe I'm crazy though.

Agree that one's carry-on should be for valuables, extra clothes and other things needed during a flight. For me, I always carry-on my laptops/tablets, cameras, mobiles and their respective adapters/accessories. These are hard to replace if lost/stolen, whereas checked luggage items can be replaced and are not 'show-stoppers'.

Anything to extract more $$$ from your wallet!!!

I have always said that checked baggage should be free, but carry-ons be charged, with the exception of handbags, computer bags....AND that the size of said carry-ons be enforced. Currently, each airline has size and weight limits for carry-ons.

Last week we flew Allegiant from Oakland to Mesa and we waited 40 minutes before the bags arrived on the bagage carousel. Paid 78.00 for this service. I will seriously consider another airline.

I guess for a weekend trip I will have to don 4 pairs of underwear, at least 3 pants, 3 shirts and stuff some flip flops in the pockets... I am going to be walking kind of funny like the Michelin Man! Kind of sounds crazy with an empty overhead bin.. I hope I can bend to sit in the seat and not look like an arrow woman! If I have a hot flash... watch out!!!!

Then they're going to charge you for a double seat- you can't win.

So are they going to charge "extra" if you're wearing clothing??? Maybe we should all fly nude!!! CHEAPSKATES!!! Anything to charge more!!!

Will the new charge be made for a shopping bag type on wheels that will accommodate an iPad and medication with a very small clutch purse. The bag easily fits under the seat.

I was considering Allegiant for a trip in June. No more- I will use Delta instead, charging for carry-ons is rediculous and the airline has now lost my business for this trip and all future trips.

What's a shame is, they win either way. If we don't bring a carry-on they save on fuel costs, and if we pay that's extra dough for them. What ticks me off is that we pay enough as it is in the flight fare to cover the added weight for fuel. Such a racket.
