California woman arrested in nail-painting incident on Southwest flight
According to CBS Los Angeles, a California woman was arrested in late February for painting her nails on a Southwest flight bound for Houston. The woman, identified as Jeanie Daniels, was on her way to visit her boyfriend and claims that the passengers seated next to her agreed to let her do her nails. But one of the flight attendants reportedly objected, so Daniels retreated to the bathroom to finish the job. When she got out of the bathroom, she got into a verbal altercation with two flight attendants and claims she was detained by law enforcement officials at the Houston airport for more than 10 hours before a judge charged her with profane and abusive language.
The CBS story essentially reports Daniels' side of the story along with an anodyne statement from Southwest, so it's hard to know if the flight attendants could have diffused the situation or if Daniels was the instigator.
Do you think that these Southwest flight attendants were right in showing zero tolerance for the California nail-painter, or does it sound like they overreacted?

EMS.......well put. You are absolutely right. For those who blame the flight attendant, they must suffer from this symdrome. People need to understand that they should have some common sense when traveling and if you don't agree with the flight attendant, bus driver or what ever just comply and complain at the end of the trip to a compny official, they actually do follow up on complaints.

I wouldn't want her painting her nails on my airplane either. What if she spills the polish, the carpet and or seat would be ruined. The flight attendants ask her to stop doing it and she kept on. She got what she deserved.

I have been on flights with people who stink. They have on so much perfume or cologne that I have to breath only thru my mouth because they stink!! Nobody makes them get off the flight or wash some of it off. What's the difference.

Incredible!! This woman gets arrested for painting her nails and yet a man in Connecticut assaults a registered nurse while she is at work protecting his baby and no charges are brought against him. I don't get it....Something is definitely wrong with this system.

It is just wrong to pollute the air in an enclosed space on an airplane with the flamable fumes of nail polish. There could be folks on that plane who have asthma and other health problems. The passenger should have asked the flight attendants if she could open up a flammable bottle of nail polish in flight, not her fellow passengers. She probably knew that she couldn't do it, but deliberately skirted the problem hoping that no one would protest.

Couldn't get me on a plane at gunpoint.

It is illegal, due to the flammable nature of the nail polish. I fly every week, and have been the victim of choking fumes from sprayed perfume. I also was sprayed directly in the face with hair spray when the lady in front of me felt it was essential to primp just prior to landing. Nothing that is sprayed should be allowed on flights.

perfumes and things with strong scents shouldn't be allowed on planes... period... there isn't sufficient ventilation... what is wrong with people these days... so much inconsideration of others... I like millions of others suffer severely from allergies and asthma which is often triggered by strong scents and perfumes... time for this lady to grow up... she got what she deserved i'm sure... when fllying, your not in charge of what you do, if you don't like it then drive...

Why do people want to do things that are annoying or sickening to others while traveling in public transportation in confined spaces. Nail polish, perfume, scented powders, sprays of any kind, even eating certain foods can make others uncomfortable or sick. I drove for Greyhound for many years and people just try to do what ever they want and feel they are not required to follow rules or laws that cover everybody. Many times I had to give people the option of stopping what they were doing or get off the bus, with the help of police if necessary. The airline attendant was in the right and the passenger should have cooperated. Every person on that plane could have benn affected, not just the people next to woman in question. I'm glad she was arrested and hope others like her read this story and realize that federal law prohibits anything that might interfere with the safe operations of a vehicle in public transportation, which annoying behavior or interfereing with a driver or attendat in the performance of their duties is covered.

you can smell that crap 20 rows down even in a large jet like a 747.

I hope that every person that thinks this woman had the right to expose others to the fumes of her nail polish on a public conveyence and then refused to obey the instructions of the flight attendant, will take the time to check the federal regulations with regard to what you can and can not do while traveling. You are not allowed to cause discomfort or conduct yourself in a manner that annoys others. If your actions are judged to interfere with the safe operation of a public conveyence, then you are subject to removal and arrest if necessary. Check with you lawyer if you think I'm wrong.

As a flight attendant, it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of all of our passengers, on a pressurized aircraft cabin, nail polish is not only toxic , but for it can be deadly. The real issue is that spme passengers just will not follow the rules, it get a little overwhelming , but what are we supposed to do, nail polishing is not allowed on aircrafts, and complying with flight attendants instructions is what this young lady should have done. Now days, everyone seems to want to do whatever they want to do, especially on the airplane. Passengers should respect the fact we are there to do a job, to make their flight more enjoyable and not to get into a fight or to have fight in order to do our job.

This woman couldn't have done her nails before her flight? The very idea is ridiculous. The first bit of turbulence and everyone around her gets polish on them.Yet to go into a restroom to finish, after being told to stop, just shows what a selfish, all about me,person she is,tying up a rest room so she could do her nails.

The Flight attendants over reacted in my opion. The girl got an ok from the ones next to her so she wasn't hurting anyone. It is crazy

Hey HLB, why so nasty? If your perfume is so strong that it overpowers people sitting by you a lot of people probably just don't enjoy being near you. I didn't say you couldn't wear it. But if you sit there and spray it on when you're 12inches from me, it can cause me to have a reaction. Why not just skip it? Why the hostility? I'm guessing people must have complained about how much perfume you use. Smelly fish is not chemical so it's fine. I didn't say a word about peanuts so don't push that off on me. I don't think it should be a problem for people to refrain from using nail polish or spraying chemicals for the duration of a flight. You're pretty nasty, so I imagine your mouth would be toxic if I had to sit by it for any period of time either. Chill out. Quit being a hateful beast. Try to get along.
