California woman arrested in nail-painting incident on Southwest flight
According to CBS Los Angeles, a California woman was arrested in late February for painting her nails on a Southwest flight bound for Houston. The woman, identified as Jeanie Daniels, was on her way to visit her boyfriend and claims that the passengers seated next to her agreed to let her do her nails. But one of the flight attendants reportedly objected, so Daniels retreated to the bathroom to finish the job. When she got out of the bathroom, she got into a verbal altercation with two flight attendants and claims she was detained by law enforcement officials at the Houston airport for more than 10 hours before a judge charged her with profane and abusive language.
The CBS story essentially reports Daniels' side of the story along with an anodyne statement from Southwest, so it's hard to know if the flight attendants could have diffused the situation or if Daniels was the instigator.
Do you think that these Southwest flight attendants were right in showing zero tolerance for the California nail-painter, or does it sound like they overreacted?

Nice link bait post title.
The reality is this woman wasn't arrested for painting her nails on a flight.
She was arrested because she didn't listen to the flight attendants instructions and got into a verbal altercation with the flight crew.
The fact that she retreated to the bathroom to finish the job after being told to stop speaks for itself. She probably copped a lot of attitude towards the crew and ultimately that is why she got arrested.
And no, I don't think people should be painting their nails on commercial flights. It's absurd that she even thought that was a good idea. But then again there is a complete lack of common sense in our country. So I'm not surprised.

Why was she told she couldn't paint her nails. Is this some sort of securfity problem or risk that I haven't heard of? The only person that could have objected (besides the flight crew) said it was okay with them. So the question remains, why?

The bitch was told not to paint her nails on the flight by the people in charge of the airplane, period. Why that was their policy is not a matter of the discussion for her or anyone who wants to question the authority to bar her from painting her nails.
This is a prime example of what is damaging this country. Everyopne want to debate the rules. Everyone believes their decisions are the right ones. Typical democraps.

Don't be an ass, the flight attendent over stepped her authority, suppose you were drinking a soda and she told you to stop drinking it would you?

I was on a flight and a passenger sprayed perfume. I was disturbed. It felt like I was choking. Several passengers were coughing. I spoke to the attendant and was told you can spray perfume on a flight. WTF?

People in the service industry have a tough enough job trying to keep the public satisfied.....nail polish STINKS. She was asked NOT to do it in a closed fuselage by the flight crew & felt that the rules don't apply to HER. Not only did the flight crew handle it properly, I wish someone would have walked by her seat & dropped a juicy fart in her face so that perhaps she might understand consideration for other passengers.

@ other repliers: the only people who would have been bothered"--really? Have you ever smelled nail polish? It does not conveniently stop its odorific assault at the 2 feet mark. Rude and disobedient too; she SHOULD be in trouble.

I think flight attendants have become despotic tyrants. They think they can do whatever pleases them. Yes, there are obnoxious passengers but flight attendants with their attitude are even more obnoxious. The women went to the bathroom in order to avoid problems, yet the arrogant flight attendants wanted it their ways. GIVE ME A BREAK! Where are we???

Like a lifeguard, flight attendants have the final word. If the woman was told to stop painting her nails then she must comply. Also, there is the issue of health. Nail polish can trigger an allergic reaction or an asthma attack. In such a confined placed the smell is overwhelming. I encountered a nail polisher on a flight to Texas and some on the flight complained of odor, headache and tightness in chest. The passenger was told to put her nail kit away and no more polish but she set up a barricade with a magazine, with the help of her friend, and continued to paint. This was pre 9/11 so not much recourse at that time. By the end of the flight this woman was also drunk. Miserable flight.

Good points, guys. The headline has been changed.
jeff Mar 8th 2012 1:35PM
If the new headline is "Nail Painting Incident" then the change was not effective. It still misleads.

This is nuts!?!? What hell was the big deal about painting your nails?? Logic is a dieing practice!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breathing in those noxious fumes while painting her nails probably has killed so many of her brain cells that she could no longer tell right from wrong. Formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate are three toxic ingredients found in nail polish. http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/natural-beauty-fashion/photos/11-beauty-products-that-may-be-ruining-the-planet/nail-poli-0 People who care about the environment think nail polish is bad for the planet. No one in my family uses it. Please take some time to learn about the reasons why nail polish is not a good product to use. Thank you.

How did she even get on the plane carrying nail polish?
sandra Mar 8th 2012 1:41PM
Oh please, have you ever known anyone that was harmed by nail polish? This story is ridiculous. That flight attendant made to much of nothing, she just wanted to get her name in the paper and show her ignorance. Those FA's are precisly the reason I do not fly, they are obnoxious to say the least.

Many products that are available for our purchase and use are not environmentally safe. Please read about nail polish and why it is not a healthy product. Thank you. http://www.tipsonhealthyliving.com/health-and-wellness/nail-polish-is-bad-for-you-heres-why

Please take some time to do some research before making a comment like that. The majority of polish available these days do not, I repeat do NOT, have these chemicals in them anymore.
If she was using a polish from 1998, it's possible. But you can't go around assuming that she was harming people by using nail polish.
That being said, there's a time and a place for painting your nails and an airplane is not it.
rita nell Mar 8th 2012 2:24PM
thanks robin...I'm so suprised that so many women have no idea what is in nail polish, how toxic or how flamable the fumes are. Some days I'm shocked by the lack of awareness...appearently nails and ego are much more important to some than saftey and consideration
jtboobers Mar 8th 2012 7:51PM
There are some of us that can't tolerate the fumes. Many hospitals even discourage the wearing of perfume because of the reactions some patients can have. I have a hard enough time keeping aerosol fumes from making it hard to breathe for me let alone the fumes from nail polish because of my COPD. Putting nail polish on in an enclosed area is not a good thing. The older I get the more rude and senseless people seem to get.

Who cares if she was painting her nails on a flight. Why would a flight attendant make her stop unless the passengers next to her complained. And going into the bathroom to finish the job sounds like a reasonable thing to do, so as not to disturb anyone else. I've been on several long flights, 14 hours long, and painting your nails is a way to pass time while flying. I would rather sit next to someone painting their nails than sitting next to screaming children or a man snoring loudly for 8 hours, disrupting my trip.
