Helping humanity, students travel the world

Humanity First works to assist people affected by natural disasters, war, and poverty in two ways. Volunteers first provide needed disaster relief services, and then they help build back those same communities. To do that, the non-profit organization utilizes volunteers who travel to affected areas, giving their time to make a difference. On the ground in Guatemala right now is a team from the University of Michigan.

A team of Humanity First USA volunteers is in Masagua, Guatemala, through March 3, for a weeklong medical mission to provide basic primary care to those in need. The volunteer team includes four doctors and 14 undergraduate students from University of Michigan.

While in Guatemala, the students will open and run a primary care clinic providing free health care; handing out hygiene packs, vitamins, and over-the-counter medicines to patients; conducting medical and dental exams; and holding health care workshops.

Humanity First has a worldwide presence with registered nonprofit status in several countries around the world including: Guyana, Peru, Trinidad, Tanzania and Ethiopia. They also serve many communities in United States.Humanity First needs volunteers who can join hands with them to help serve the needy and says, “Volunteering your time and skills can be as valuable as your financial donations for the organization.”

Responsible and dedicated volunteers with diverse skills are encouraged to join with Humanity First on a one-time project basis or an ongoing team role to make their own difference.
