Man arrested for stealing glacier in Chile
Late last week, law enforcement officials in Chile detained a man for allegedly stealing part of a glacier from inside Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, located in the Patagonia region. It is believed that the thief intended to sell the ice to various clubs in the capital city of Santiago, where it would be put into expensive designer drinks. Police stopped the man, who was driving a large refrigerated truck, for a routine traffic violation, but were surprised to find that he had five tons of ice hidden in the back. Upon further examination, they discovered that the ice had come from the Jorge Montt Glacier, which is located not far from where the man was apprehended. So far, the driver has only been charged with theft, but officials are considering extending the charges to violating a national monument as well, since the ice came from inside a national park.
It is estimated that the five tons of ice would have sold for about $6300 had the man been able to deliver it to is buyers in Santiago. That doesn't seem like a lot of money for harvesting so much ice.
Global climate change has played havoc on glaciers throughout Patagonia, and the Jorge Montt is no exception. Scientists say that is is currently retreating at a rate of about a half-mile per year, which is an alarmingly fast pace. The question now of course is how much of that is due to these nefarious ice thieves?

"...were surprised to find that he had five tons of ice hidden in the back...."
Exactly how do you "hide" 10,000 pounds of ice in the back of a truck?

It was Chile, by the time he reached home he would have had an ice cube. lol

I hope they put him on ice.

Ice comes from frozen rain, that comes from somewhere else in the world, than where it's found!! Probably from rain that originated in China or Rissia or Canada, but not from Chile!?!

From what comic book do you get your information?

If it was tuly receeding at that rediculous pace it wouldn't even be there now because there's no way the site is that larger to start with and if people were smart ebough to do the math they would see that!!! Global warming is a hoax and nothing more to scam the people of the world out of their money because no amount of money would ever replace it so why do they need it????

What an uneducated, asinine statement (not to mention poorly written, but sadly on par with that of your like-minded brethren). As you obviously do not know, the Patagonian ice fields are among the largest in the world, behind only those of Greenland and Antarctica. Their rate of recession has been well documented for years. One should always get one's facts in order, so that they might have an informed opinion on a given subject. Spewing inanitities does nothing to further dialogue on any topic.

You say that it is not real global warming because ther site is small? The Jorge Montt glaceir area is 469sq miles ans from 1975-2000 retreated at the rate of only 11 ft per year. That has sped up to 1/2 mile per year. You lack regard for facts

"GLOBAL WARMING", It's what caused the glaciers to melt so we could exist. Otherwise the Earth would be encased in Ice. With Ice = no crops, No crops = no food.
Scott Feb 6th 2012 6:03PM
No ice = higher sea levels = less land for people and crops.

Why would anyone care if the drink they hold in their hand has ice from a glacier in it or ice from an ice machine? How could you tell the difference to start with? Who cares? Such a silly thing to do and people are doing it, this guy steals the ice, now he goes to jail, the glacier loses ice and someone is still overpaying for a drink with glacier ice in it that came from an ice maker.
Dale Kendall Mar 16th 2012 3:40AM
Glacier Ice is compressed so that little air exists in it. It does not melt as fast and dilute the drink while keeping it colder longer. To me it wouldn't be worth the extra money. To Each his own.
Mbkeefer Feb 6th 2012 9:38PM
Glacier ice is denser and a lot harder than ordinary ice. It takes longer to melt than ice from an ice maker. The people who pay extra for it can tell the difference.

Well....That would explain the global warming theory..It isn't melting...People have been stealing it....
(Before ya reply, bashing me, or calling me names...That was a joke)

After 13,000 years of natural global warming we are welcoming the melting of glaciers to saturate the un-plantable areas of the world, like our deserts.
