American Airlines to cut jobs, work remaining force harder
Update: 3:33PM EST: American expects to lay off "400 pilots, 2,300 flight attendants, 1,400 management and support staff positions and 8,800 ground workers and mechanics." source
American Airlines parent company AMR is expected to lay out the company's plan for moving forward from bankruptcy today and the news is not good. American Airlines may cut between 10,000 and 15,000 jobs across the company, outsourcing aircraft maintenance in a bid to keep flying.
"The surprise is going to be big and it's going to be bloody and it's going to be nasty," Vicki Bryan, a bond analyst at Gimme Credit LLC in New York, told Business Week adding 10,000 jobs "is not unreasonable." The airline will have to cut as much as $2 billion to gain competitive labor costs, more than the $800 million AMR estimated, she said.
Reporting a $904 million loss in December, American employs about 74,000 full- and part-time workers plus 14,000 at regional carrier American Eagle.
In December, Gadling noted the bankruptcy made American "among the last of the legacy carriers to finally concede to ultra-competitive pricing and sky high oil prices. It's a sad day for stockholders, but like many of the fallen giants they'll pick themselves up, dust off and continue to operate -- albeit a little bit leaner."
"It's clear we have to be a more nimble, flexible and efficient airline in order to compete successfully and be consistently profitable," said Bruce Hicks, an AMR spokesman. "Before discussing publicly any of our proposed changes, we will first meet with the leaders of the unions."
Union representatives have called a 4 p.m. news conference to discuss AMR's plans.

OH BOY!

American Airlines, TWA, Boeing, The midwest has seen it's share of failed or willing to move to a better home.
I say, Let AA do what they will. Southwest,AirTrans, and others' will pick up some of the employees.
The rest will fit in under Obama Care.
And if you work for a coal Company. What the USA won't use because of the EPA and the Sierria Club, China will take all the coal the USA can send their way.
And in the hot summer at 110 deg. the wind don't blow, The Hydro power is low due to the low lake levels. The only power, reactive power available is coal, gas, or peaking oil turbines.
If You don't turn on the dirty power, then plan on your power being Off!!! The third Agency Gov. Perry of Texas was going to scrub was the EPA. If he was able to remember just 3 little letters, EPA, Then he would be the republician Presidential Choice. nuf said TW

Of course airlines are losing money and deservingly so. We are packed like sardines onto planes where the row of seats in front of us are almost in our laps. taking a long flight is grueling when someone keeps slamming into your knees every time they move their seat back. Then machines view you as if you were walking nude, strip searches and harassment at the TSA counters with more fees to pay them. On my last flight I had made reservations months in advance on an aisle seat so I'd have a bit of space only to be thrown into a center seat once the plane arrived. I tell you what, I'll sign a waiver releasing the airline and government from any accountability for reduced fares and no TSA.

The airlines pack people into airplanes because everyone wants the lowest possible fares more than they want comfort. As far as TSA goes, some of us who have lost friends and co-workers to acts of terrorism wish TSA had come on to the scene a long time ago as, unfortunately there are a lot of nuts out there endangering society.

Gee, isn't that a Shame? Sounds Just like the Post OFFFICE!
How can you expect to run Routes in areas that only need 10 seats when you have 50 seats?
How can you have All those Routes in those Little Towns that have been Loosing $ for Yrs!
How can you compete with Non Union Airlines? That have Much Lower Labor costs?
How can you pay Ground Crews and Staff with HS Level Educations , Twice what other Airlines are paying ?
The Unions Killed the Goose Laying the Golden Eggs, the party is Over..! You got your nice $50 hr wages and Benefits while it lasted, now what? Go work at Wal Mart? Home Depot! Go be a Trucker? It was good while it lasted though wasn't it?
Ahhh. the Good Old days..

They want the workers to make major concessions, lay off a large number of employees, but yet no mention of the fat cats taking pay cuts and or making major concessions. Are they going to sell off all the properties they own that are used by the big shots. Bet not. Again they will blame the unions for where they are at, and not those that are making the millions no matter how bad the company is run.

Spoken like a true liberal who aced all your class envy and class warfare classes!
I'll bet you have more to offer to your fellow citizens than those "fat cats!"

I don't think the public or security is to blame for American Airlines non stop flight to bankruptcy! Think, think hard???
SHIRLEY WASHER Feb 1st 2012 8:12PM
Of course it's greed. The people who run big corporations do not comprehend the simple principle that greed causes a brick wall to go up in the process of money balancing.

Think real hard?!
challenger7889 Feb 1st 2012 4:44PM
It's sad to think tight seats and security was AA's down fall
kbroome1969 Feb 1st 2012 5:48PM
yeah thats what their problem is......NOT.... they suck...we havent used them in years and nerver will again.. fees are all they know...

Fearful, frightening & scary moments as we flew AA last month to Florida. My husband & I were booked to fly across country for majior surgery in Tampa, FL. BOTH Departure & Return flights dealing with SFO airport were cancelled by Robo-Call.
Can you imagine? Will we make it on time? Will we ever get back home? These unfortunate events will leave us with a continuous & naging feeling, every time we fly American.
So Sad- A Great Airline w/Wonderful People-

You can put that right into the lap of the unions. They have been purpously doing everything they can to make the American flying experience as miserable as possible. I have that directly from one of their cabin crew who explained to me that they are demonstrating to the company the power they have. Little do they realize that in their efforts they are ailienating the very customer that pays their mortgage payment and the financial health of ther company.
I used to fly for an airline and have seen first hand the mentality involved in some of the union activity. It is amazing how otherwise intellegent and professional individuals can get caught up in activities that actually damage the very hand that feeds them. It becomes a matter of ego in who wins and loses. The big and long term picture doesn't seem to matter.

When Bush handed Obama the keys to the White House--gas was 1.77 cents per gallon---isn't anyone at least courious why we are paying in excess of 3.65 per gallon now? I am sure the good folks at American Airlines United Airlines, Southwest and others are----Let me tell you why--Obama is using the EPA and there useless socialist exsistance to back door taxes and fee's on the American People, trying to make it look like he had nothing to do with it--When in fact he had 100% to do with it..that is just oil...
UALFA Feb 1st 2012 6:13PM
Gas hasn't been that cheap since CLINTON was in the white house. I suppose you forgot about the price gouging after hurricane Katrina huh? Gasoline jumped to over $5/gallon. On Bush's watch. Payback for big oil keeping him POTUS.
You're just another bigot blaming Obama for the countries woes, using this site as your soapbox. Get a clue, do some research and see a therapist.
atsaguy Feb 1st 2012 6:59PM
$1.77..not in Southern California...maybe in Texas...but of course its obama's fault.
ron Feb 1st 2012 8:55PM
It's a proven fact that the things that go on in are economy do not take effect over night and that all things are a result of 8 to 10 years before we feel the effects from decisions that were made in the past. Let me see Newman that was Bush era. Just saying.

I can't believe the stupid things people say.
