Budget Vacation Guide 2012: Macedonia

Since the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Macedonia has hidden beneath the radar. While Croatia and Montenegro receive sustained coverage for their coastlines and Slovenia pops up here and there as a budget-friendly alternative to pricey Switzerland, landlocked Macedonia has received short shrift.
The country remains shut out of major Europe-wide organizations over its very name, which the Greek government contests as a stealthy move toward an eventual invasion of the northern Greek region of Macedonia. It's a ludicrous proposition, and it has kept Macedonia far more isolated than it should be.
Macedonia's reputation as a tourist destination has slowly grown over the last few years, and with good reason. The country offers amazingly good value for money. Transportation, accommodation, food, and tourist attractions are all inexpensive. The country's chief draws are Lake Ohrid, which Macedonia shares with Albania, and its scattered monasteries. Lake Ohrid is starkly beautiful, great for swimming and water sports. It's anchored by the city of Ohrid, itself spilling over with churches, fortresses, and other objects of historical interest.
Monasteries abound in Macedonia. One of these, Treskavec, is located near the town of Prilep in the south. There are marked hiking trails winding up hills to the monastery. At the top, you'll find accommodation for the cost of a small donation. A simple dinner is even included in the deal.
If Macedonian tourism taps into its treasures the right way, this country should see its current trickle of tourists become a modest stream.

It is by no means a ludicrous proposition that an issue over historical claims, in the future would not be attempted by a people that have ussurped the name of their nation from a region of another. You should concentrate on vacation destinations and not give an uneducated opinion of the political enviornment in favor of one side or another.

Good call.

I must agree with IKE.... STOP editorializing about issues you OBVIOUSLY know nothing about. "Macedonia" has been a contentious issue for over 100 years and this area of the Balkans has seen much bloodshed, whether Greece claims about the very name Macedonia are ill founded goes far beyond your obviously very limited familiarity with this matter. Here's a hint: It is NOT just about the name that Greece is concerned about;
STICK to reviewing hotels and swimming facilities and travel "Deals".Something you might know something about.

"It's a ludicrous proposition...." I'll bet this person is from America! But as a guest lecturer on Edgar Allan Poe at the Aristotle University of Thesaliniki, in 2004, I not only learned a little of the Ancient Greek history, but that Cristianity began with a Jew, Saint Paul the Devine. We Americans are so ignorant of world geography and history, much less the authority to make the statement that the travel writer has about both, gives Americans the deserved reputation that we have, of being "just plain stupid!" It's a beautiful little country with incredible tasty food that is not spoiled by EU regulations. You have lakes and mountains up to about 2600 m for hiking and skiing. The people are very friendly and you will find always someone to help you if needed. Most people do speak some english, german or french.

Only deep rooted anger would take such a simple statement and turn it into a huge politcal issue. Sounds like a lot of angry local people. I appreciate the travel writer's attempt to draw interest to the area ,as well as capital, but I'll choose a far more friendly area to visit.

If you judge a whole country on one comment (and who know's who that person even is) then you better stay on your own "save" grounds....my guess is you are an american....

That comment is not by local people, Kimberly, but by vicious Greek nationalists, who have been holding hostage this little country on the international scene. Do not judge the country by this commentary. Macedonians are and will be friendly to visitors as hospitality is hugely important in their culture.

I had the pleasure of spending 3 weeks in Macedonia during July 2010. Delicious food, very friendly people and awesome scenery and history; it is a great country and I would whole-heartedly recommend a visit. It is indeed unfortunate that the ultra-nationalistic tendencies of one bordering country would try to put a negative spin on Macedonia's historically accurate desire to be known as The Republic of Macedonia.
