Unhappily, there are a lot of stupid information in media. I live in São Paulo, Brazil and go to Rio often.
I never had any problem.
Rio is the most beautiful city in the world. Sure we have problems, but is completely different comparing with article.
I hope people try learn about the places, before judge them.
Brazil is the sixth world economy and we are growing fast.
We have 5% of unemployment (less than USA and Europe)...and... we control our debits.
We have a lot of things to do, but is an absurd put Rio in this list.

We flew to Rio to begin a cruise to Europe about 3 years ago. We had a lengthy ride from the airport to the port. On our way we passed area that looked a lot like the photo above in Rio. It was something that made most of us sit back and think. Here we were on our way to start a cruise and people were living in cardboard shacks and I do mean cardboard. The guide told us they had no running water or bathroom facilities. They used a pot and just dumped it out the window. For water they had to walk with pots to get water that may have been contaminated. We also went through area where mansions were. Two different class of people very poor and very wealthy.
