Me and my girlfriend drove across Mongolia in the 2009 rally, totally on our own and without any convoy and we never heard mention of any bloody bandits

I promise I'm not exaggerating; it may be something that's only occurred in recent years - or perhaps, since you did it totally on your own, you weren't warned about it... but there was several reports that locals on motorcycles came in & tried to make off with some goods from Rallyer's campsites...
