Mtskheta is really nice place to visit and enjoy its beautiful sightseeings and historical monuments, just half an hour drive from Tbilisi.
With the same success you can make a day trip in Signagi, small town in Khakheti region, specialized in wine producing, in the eastern part of the country. Just it needs little bit longer to reach it, but still quite good one day trip destination and worth to be seen, especially in the autumn, during harvesting season. Marshutkas there go from Ortachala auto station, ticket price is 6 GEL (3.60 USD) and it takes about 2 hours to get there from Tbilisi.
There are even free buses, making Signagi-Tbilisi-Signagi tours, during summer. Buses go from Rose Square at 10 am and come back to Tbilisi at 18 o'clock.
