Video: Kayaker has rare encounter with a blue whale
A kayaker at Redondo Beach, California recently had the rare opportunity to see one of these magnificent creatures up close and personal, and lucky for us he was wearing a GoPro helmet cam at the time. The footage he captured is stunning, with some fantastic views of the whale, both above and below the water, giving viewers a true sense of the size of these animals.
I have to say, this guy is definitely braver than I am. Watching the whale from a kayak would be a humbling enough experience, but getting into the water, and seeing it pass by underneath, would be equal parts terrifying and awe inspiring.
Check out the video below.

Wow just amazing. And for all those who don't get the whole idea of this being illegal, this kind is just fine. The whale was noticed by the dude. Can't anyone be curious now-a-days? It's not like he was Medusa and turned the whale into stone by looking at it. He wasn't harming it in any way possible. He looked, the whale didn't care, and everything is still good with the world. Still, this video was GREAT!!! :)

One of the rarest, most beautiful creatures on this earth. One of the most fortuitous of experiences..and some of you are concerned with asinine, man-made "laws"? Anal much? Get a life. A real one.

Thank u for sharing. Love Redondo and it's whales. Keep the Bay clean for the Wildlife and we can all enjoy.

Wow, amazing, I don't know anything about blue whales, but is 90 feet normal? It is astounding, thanks for sharing your wonderful experience.

The article made it sound like it just a chance encounter. I don't have a problem with it not being, I just thought the article was a bit misleading. I thought the video was totally awesome, & would love to do something like that myself, only in something a bit bigger than that kayak! Sorry I wasn't clear in my comment!

The popular, trendy word Awesome that everybody says for even the smallest idiotic occurrence is quite appropriate here including his learned falsetto Woo-Hoo sound.

The danger in being close to any wild animal is that they are unpredictable. Due to their size, their "play" may knock you out. We even tell our toddlers to be gentle with others until they learn the difference. And like people, some animals are just more aware than others. This clip was totally enjoyable and I'm glad it all turned out well.

I'm not sure what laws pertian to on the west coast .But on the east coast of new england around provincetown there are whale watching trips that you can get as close as the kayaker. My son went on a field trip and got some beautifull pictures. They were so close at one point that he said he could almost touch the whale as it rode out of the water along side the boat.he said they had very dark blue eyes.those pics he got are our screensavers!!!

I went on one of those trips too. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my like. A humpback whale surfaced right next to the boat, and another did one of those leap/backflips out of the water.

"Here is the California Fish and Wildlife statute, it mirrors the federal law. Attempts to pursue and overtake marine mammals is a violation, this man will likely be having conversations with both California and federal wardens."
Thanks, Captain America.

Oh, what a lucky guy! Blues are such majestic, beautiful animals! Twenty years ago I was going to Catalina from Newport and I saw one but it was so big, at first I thought was an overturned boat. I reversed the engine on my boat and stopped. I was in such state that I had forgotten I had had trouble starting the boat that day. It took me half an hour to re-start the motor. Then we saw the whale again and noticed it had a baby along it. I did not want to go to close so as not to annoy it and she swam parallel to my boat 25 or so yards to port. And I stood just idling there with tears in my eyes at seeing the largest animal that has ever lived on earth.
