I've been to the Peak a few times (via tram), and although I agree that it provides a wonderful view of HK, I find the 30 minute hike hard to believe. At 1821 feet (555 m) that would be a tremendous achievement. The lower tram station itself is at least a 15 minute walk from HK Central. And since you pointed out that few signs point the way, then it would have been helpful if you had included a map, so the time-pressed traveler does not get lost in the narrow side streets you so aptly described.
