The guy in question wasn't flipping off readers; he was flipping off me -- the photographer. And it's not trashy; it hints at the dynamic between my Cuban friend and me: He was willing to shop at Wal-Mart, sure (you don't see Wal-Marts in Cuba, after all), but he knew enough about Wal-Mart to know that my photograph was somewhat ironic in nature. By flipping me off, he was letting me know that he knew this...
