I do think the glamour and classiness has gone out of appearance of flight attendants. I do appreciate that there is more diversity, however. Age and ethnic background certainly should not have an impact on whether someone gets hired or not, but rather whether they can physically and mentally do the job. Same goes for height ... can they reach the overhead bins? That's all that should matter when it comes to height.
In saying that, I will say that the APPEARANCE of a flight attendant should still be taken into consideration. Not that they need to be drop-dead gorgeous, not saying that at all. They need to be neat and professional looking. They are representing the company and they work with the public. They shouldn't look like they just rolled out of bed. I may get some disagreement, but I also still believe they should be of certain weight (reasonably). This is a physical job and I have been that passenger who sat in the aisle getting "bumped" by the "wider" FA every time she or he walked by. Just sayin'. I love the classy uniforms from back in the day and if they were able to produce something like those inexpensively, all the better. Aside from the girdles and high heels, of course. Get real! Like I said, this is a physical job! FAs need to be comfortable!
