The 5 ugliest states in the country
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. San Francisco Examiner writer and occasional Gadling contributor Bob Ecker doesn't behold much, at least for a few unlucky states. Ecker previously named the prettiest US states including coastal California, exotic Hawaii, diverse New York, historic Virginia, and verdant Washington. He's now determined the unfortunate ugliest states, measured by landscape, not people:
- Connecticut: the Constitution State is called a "suburban hell"
- Delaware: small and boring
- Kansas: land-locked and a "throwback," in a bad way
- Nevada: outside of Las Vegas, it's a "desolate and forbidding wasteland" (what about Lake Tahoe, Bob?)
- Oklahoma: another flat, hot, and boring state (don't tell Lonely Planet's Robert Reid, an OK native)

Oklahoma has forests, desserts, lakes, rivers, and mountains. We also are the leading state in Nano-Tech and Medical Advances. You might check the people around you in CA. A very large percentage of actors, singers, and media artists come from Oklahoma or came here for their professional training. The people here are friendly and generous.
If by boring you mean we don't have a Liberal, fake,Wheee look at me, style of life, then yes we are boring, we are focused on what really counts in life.

Oh, I get it. Oklahoman's are anti-liberal. Guess that eliminates about 51% of the population. Wonder if some of those liberal's like to focus on what's "important" in life.
Nothing like a partisan pinhead to promote Oklahoma.
P.S. Before anybody throws me a label. I'm a gun toting, family loving, hard working, libertarian. The labels "conservative" and "liberal" are just two sides of the same old broken record to me.

I'm sorry, but Nevada, outside of Las Vegas as one of the ugliest states? I think you got this backwards. Nevada has a gorgeous landscape that especially a rock climber and an outdoors enthusiast such as myself can truly appreciate. It's Las Vegas that's hideous and a man-made monstrosity that makes Nevada ugly.

Sounds like this person hasn't been around much.
South Dakota is #1. It's even called the "Badlands"
You ripped on Connecticut for being a suburb, so how is Rhode Island not a suburb of Connecticut? Connecticut has beautiful mountains, Rhode Island guilty of being to small to have any nature.
Where's New Mexico, Iowa, Idaho in this?!?
And the ugliest by far is California. Now before you knock me on this one, yes there is Lake Tahoe but Nevada got pinged for that. There are the beaches but the anything along the coast (air and water) is some of the most polluted in the country. I lived in Cali for 27 years, I've been everywhere and most of that state is ugly

Delaware wins my vote for ugliest state! I was glad to see it was on your list too!

If Connecticut is such an ugly state or as the article reads, "a suburban hell", then I have to wonder why so many Hollywood personalities chose to live in our State. With miles and miles of shoreline, mountains when you want them, forests, lakes and rivers, hardly "hell". Very beautiful state, however, very expensive to live here.

He informed me that when the US set up the POW camps in the region was when the real distrust of the Americans started.

'Travel' knows better than this absurd topic.

I mean the original writer's notion that 'flat' is 'boring' or that destinations should even be judged by topography. Kinda have to go to know.

I mostly agree... Holy Delaware. And must disagree, Nevada is a gorgeous state and Las Vegas is a hell hole. Flying over Nevada is one of the best aerial views in the ENTIRE country. Iowa, South Dakota, Indiana, Missouri should all be close contenders for this list. Connecticut is lovely to drive through and has some very pretty areas. Hell, FLORIDA should be listed before Connecticut.
