Travellers insurance is ESSENTIAL when abroad, especially if you're doing backpacker adventure activities. There are travel insurance companies that cater to people like this, notably they cover "high risk" activities like bungee jumping and rafting. World Nomads is a well-known backpackers insurer that I've used and been happy with.
Mostly, people must remember that even if you're travelling in a "safe" country like Australia, one must still use their common sense. I have more safety tips for backpackers on my blog http://backpackers-australia.org.
